Cancun Transporation

Taxis

Taxis are everywhere and the rates are regulated by zones (or areas). Generally cheaper to catch a taxi from the street than from the hotel lobby. Taxis are available 24 hours a day.

Bus

A great alternative to get around the hotel zone and downtown is the local bus. There are bus stops all the way along the hotel zone. "R1" buses go all the way to the downtown markets and to the Cancun bus terminal. If you are just traveling within the hotel zone, almost any bus will do. If you are not sure, just ask the driver by giving him the name of the place you are visiting. I.e. "Senior Frogs". There are bus stops with numbers which tells your location. The buses will stop infront of most hotels and runs very frequently, almost every 2 minutes. Buses run 24 hours a day. The cost is currently about 7 pesos or 65 cents (USD) to ride. Bus drivers do take USD but exchange rate given will be very poor.

Bus Terminal

To travel to various locations outside the Cancun area (Cozumel, Playa Del Carmen, Chichen Itza, Tulum to name a few) can be accessed by bus as well. First take the bus to the bus terminal. To get to the bus terminal, you will need to take the "R1" bus. Tell the driver "a la terminal" and sit near the front and he can tell you when you have arrived. When you get off, you will need to cross the street to get to the bus terminal. Once inside, you will need to purchase tickets to the appropriate destination. Round trip tickets are generally double the one way ticket price.

There are also lots of taxis lined up outside the bus terminal.

Car Rentals

Car rentals are available at all the major hotels and car rentals shops along the hotel zone and in plazas. If you plan to rent a car for more than 3 days, generally, it will be about the same price for a weekly rate. It also may be worthwhile to rent for a week from the airport to save on airport transfers to the hotel and taxi back to the airport. Check out the discount car rentals online.

Roads for day trips or overnight trips can be done. For major tourist attractions, many of the signs are posted along the road or highway with arrows.

You can also access other areas such as Isla Mujeres and Cozumel nearby via ferries. See ferry schedules.
