Tulum

Map Location

The acient Maya ruins of Tulum is located along the eastern coast of the Yucatan about 130 km (~81 miles) south of Cancun. This pre-Columbian archaeological site in the Yucatan was built by the Maya Civilization. The name Tulum is the Mayan word meaning "fence", "trench" or wall. The Tulum site with walls that surrounded the site allowed Tulum to serve at a fort against enemy attacks. For more on the history of Tulum, please visit Wikipedia online. An excellent site for information on indigenous people: Indigenous Peoples Literature.

Tulum Tulum

There is a beautiful sandy beach at Tulum so don't forget to take your bathing suits.

Tulum

How do I get there?

Take a Tour: Pre-book in advance or book at your hotel when you get there. The benefit of booking in advance is saving time. The costs for booking in advance is generally the same even if you wait until you get there. Normally the tour is sold in combination with Xel-Ha. There are some tours that offer the Tulum and Coba combo.

Rent a Car: The travel time from Cancun to Tulum is about 2 hours if you drive. From the hotel zone, follow the highway signs all the way to Tulum. Remember to take a map. See car rental information.

Take a Bus. Along the hotel zone, the public bus is about 65 cents to ride and passes by the hotels almost very 2 minutes. Take the RI bus to the bus terminal downtown. It's a good idea to ask the bus driver to let you know when you get to the bus terminal and sit near the front. At the bus terminal, buy tickets to Tulum. Again, ask the driver to let you off at the "Tulum Ruins". It's a good idea to sit near the front. Also, note when the bus returns before you start your tour. You don't want to miss the last bus. The bus is airconditioned and makes stops along the way taking about 2 hours. Bus schedules and tickets online: Ticket Bus.

If you do this tour on your own, it's a great idea to hire a tour guide. Tour guides will be soliciting near the entrance where you purchase your tickets. You can have a private guide or share with others. The current rate is $25 USD for the tour.

Recommended to bring: The area does not have much shade and during the day, the sun can get extremely hot so be warned. Bottled water can be purchased at the entrance. A hat, comfortable walking shoes or hiking shoes, bathing suit under street clothes, towel, camera.
