Tulum

Location
The acient Maya ruins of Tulum is located along the eastern coast of the Yucatan
about 130 km (~81 miles) south of Cancun. This pre-Columbian archaeological
site in the Yucatan was built by the Maya Civilization. The name Tulum is the
Mayan word meaning "fence", "trench" or wall. The Tulum
site with walls that surrounded the site allowed Tulum to serve at a fort against

There is a beautiful sandy beach at Tulum so don't forget to take your bathing
suits.

How do I get there?
Take a Tour: Pre-book in advance or book at your hotel when
you get there. The benefit of booking in advance is saving time. The costs for
booking in advance is generally the same even if you wait until you get there.
Normally the tour is sold in combination with Xel-Ha.
There are some tours that offer the Tulum and Coba
combo.
Rent a Car: The travel time from Cancun to Tulum is about
2 hours if you drive. From the hotel zone, follow the highway signs all the
way to Tulum. Remember to take a map. See car
rental information.

Take a Bus. Along the hotel zone, the public bus is about
65 cents to ride and passes by the hotels almost very 2 minutes. Take the RI
bus to the bus terminal downtown. It's a good idea to ask the bus driver to
let you know when you get to the bus terminal and sit near the front. At the
bus terminal, buy tickets to Tulum. Again, ask the driver to let you off at
the "Tulum Ruins". It's a good idea to sit near the front. Also, note
when the bus returns before you start your tour. You don't want to miss the
last bus. The bus is airconditioned and makes stops along the way taking about

If you do this tour on your own, it's a great idea to hire a tour guide. Tour
guides will be soliciting near the entrance where you purchase your tickets.
You can have a private guide or share with others. The current rate is $25 USD
for the tour.
 
Recommended to bring: The area does not have much shade and
during the day, the sun can get extremely hot so be warned. Bottled water can
be purchased at the entrance. A hat, comfortable walking shoes or hiking shoes,
bathing suit under street clothes, towel, camera.
