DO NOT RENT FROM THIS CAR RENTAL PLACE. We rented a VW for $35.00 a day ended up costing us $75.00 a day. The car did not have a first gear, did not have working lights, little to no breaks, it would pop out of gear and only go into reverse.  Max speed was 25 MPH, the car would go top speed for about 5 miniutes and then drop down to about 10-15 MPH.  It took us an hour to get to the east side of the Island (normally 25 min.).  We were terrifed that we would be stranded somewhere.  We realized how bad it was once we got back to town and the locals were laughing at the car.

Don't use these guys. After paying them cash they still charged my credit card. While the amount was not significant this is the first time in 13 years of travel to Mexico that a company has done this. I would strongly advise anyone looking for a car rental agency in Cozumel to Never Use This Agency! They are located in front of the Chedraui. So if you are staying in the Plaza Las Glorias don't go across the street and rent a car!

We rented a car from Je De Cozumel, S.A.. (next to the Chedraui, south of town) on January 1, 2002 to drive circumnavigate the island of Cozumel.  Very bad experience!!   We went to the shop about 7:00 pm on Dec 31, and asked to rent a car for the next day.  The least expensive one they had was a VW Safari (400 pesos!).  The fellow in charge, Basilio, said there was none available until tomorrow morning. So we walked back to our rental villa, and returned the
next morning.  Then he rented us the same Safari that had been sitting in the lot all night!  I just chalked it up to him not wanting to do the paperwork till the next day.

I then made a BIG mistake!!  I didn't check the vehicle thoroughly (or even at all, since it looked like a piece of crap!).  Turned out the thing had no seatbelts, no windshield wipers, a non-working speedometer, non-working turn signals, and non-working headlights!  But what turned out to be really bad, was that the hood (which is held down by latches on the outside of the vehicle) wasn't latched!  We (wife, myself, 2 kids) went out in the vehicle along the east-west roat to the easternmost beach, on our way around the island. Looking at the gas guage, I didn't think we had enough gas to go all the way around the island, so decided to go back to the Pemex station on the outskirts of San Miguel.  In my hurry, I went a little faster over one of the speed bumps, and the hood flew up and cracked the windshield!  Scared my wife half to death.  I got out and only then saw how the hood was SUPPOSED to be latched!

Anyway, nothing we could do, and didn't want to ruin our day by going back to the JE rental place, so continued around the island.  We stopped at San Francicso beach and stayed till dusk.  Then driving back to San Miguel, I found out that the headlights didn't work!  Couldn't hardly see a thing!  Then a Cozumel cop coming the other way, made a U-turn and stopped me!  I showed him that the headlights didn't work at all (high nor low beams), and he made
some notes about JE, then let me go.  Luckily our rental house was on the south outskirts of town, so we made it without incident.  But I didn't want to go to JE at night to return the piece of junk with no headlights, so waited till 8:00 am the next morning.

The JE guy, Basilio, said that I would have to pay for the windshield (700 pesos), because the hood WAS latched!  And that the headlights and turn signals worked when he rented me the car, and I would have to pay for those, too, etc.!!!   He basically lied about everything, including saying that he had personally checked the hood latches in the morning, but I was at the shop
about 10 minutes before he arrived, and he never looked at the front of the vehicle at all.

Moral of the story: Check that vehicle 9 ways from heck before renting! And don't rent from JE!

P.S.  I refused to pay, but he has my credit card number, and I'm going to try to dispute the bill with the credit card company, but don't have much hope of success!
