We're staying at FA, too...

We've stayed there the last three times we've gone to Coz.  We rent a car for a day or two, but not the entire time.  We rent a car when we go to the east side, but the rest of the time we take taxi's or walk.  Dzul Ha is right next door, Chankanaab not too far down the street, and Playa Corona is a longer walk, but you can take a taxi, too.  We also go into town every night for dinner (have never eaten anything other than breakfast at the hotel, and maybe a snack).  It works well for us, and adds maybe $10 to $15 a day to our tab, versus a car at whatever the going rate is now.  E-mail me if you have more questions.  Have fun in Coz!

Book on line--much cheaper. Book at a couple of places if first time there because if they don't treat you fairly walk away and go someplace else. All are good and all can be bad. note things wrong with car even if they don't want to and they are much nicer when you pick up the car than when you return it. So if not nice leave.

subject: insurance

We always decline the insurance- and our experience with an accident with a cab was that we stayed at the scene and the police called the head of the cab drivers and he came and we all went to the police station- we weren't put in jail- we sat on the lobby and given some pop -until the negotiators came out of a room- $500 was charged to our Master Card, and when we got home we sent in all the papers to Master Card and they covered it.

subject: Car Rental, insurance cost

Insurance can add $10 or more per day in our experience.
We usually decline insurance, but keep a Master Card with us that's good on foreign soil, and has a generous limit.

And BTW, opened top vehicles are really convenient for hoisting dive bags in and out of the vehicle. We never lock a car on the island, have never been the victim of theft, but never leave anything of value in sight either.

I rented a Jeep for 1 day for $50 usd which included everything; insurance tax etc. This place was attached to the Barracuda hotel directly to the right of the hotel entrance (forget the name) I did see cheaper but I hear they do not include everything and some require a time share tour. A guy in town quoted me $45/day

Car Rental...We found a link (from travelnotes)to discounted car rental. It turned out to be a good deal ($28/day instead of $40). Make sure you point out every scratch and nick before you accept responsibility for the car. Also, make sure when you fill up with gas that you get a receipt stating that it's full and how much you put in. This will help you avoid any hassles.
