Comments: The weather was a little rough the first day we arrived in Coz.
The shop recommended a "larger boat" with several other divers. I went
diving on a very slow and small Black Shark boat in rough seas.

My buddy Dan & I chose to skip diving for a smaller -but faster-boat the
following day. The same slow Black Shark boat came in to El-Prsidente's dock
to pick us up. We disagreed to go on and asked that our request for a fast
boat be met. In short; we missed another day of diving.

Our "night" dive was a joke. We were told that we will have 6 divers to
find out that 7 showed up. We were jammed at Paradise Reef with 6 other dive
boats. We were told to meet at the bottom.
Sure enough; two couples got separated. One guy had a problem with his
bouyancy so he stayed close to the surface. His wife's first night dive was
'a one to remember'! She crashed on my buddy's (Dan) back because she was
over weighted. The divemaster decided to go after her husband and got him
extra weights. When they descended; our group was mixed up with another
group. Dan & I were watching the divemaster trying to figure out who's who
from both groups.
There were so many flash lights that I turned my light off. That was OK
since the light that I've rented from Black Shark had "dead" batteries. I
could not see beyond 10 feet.
Dan & I wanted to abort the dive but chose to finish it becuase we thought
that we will end up on the surface waiting for the other divers to surface
anyway. Plus; that dive was a "free" one. we were told that the night dive
is complimentary since we were diving multiple days.

We ended up diving 5 days out of 10 nights stay in Coz. Upon settling with
the shop for money on Sunday; the owner was not in but has left a list of
"extra" charges that were added. We paid extra $5.00 a day and additional
$35.00 for the "night" dive. My buddy was charged additional $20.00 for
nitrox when he was told that the charge would be $15.00 per day! The owner
would not pick up the phone and reply to our calls the following day. Luis
kept telling us that the owner is away and that he'll be back in "cinque
mementos".

The harbour master closed the harbour the last scheduled day of diving. We
missed our day divemaster (Limber). So; we left a total of 670$ Pesos in
tips. The divemaster and his captain (Frank) were supposed to split it. We
made a mistake because they both told us NEVER to trust anyone in the shop.
> The following day when I called and asked Limber about the money; he said
that he has never received a penny. We felt bad becuase we were leaving to
the airport and did not have time to go to the shop and give him additional
money. I also wanted to confront Luis in the shop and ask him about the
money!

One evening; when visiting the shop to confirm diving for the next day
(policy), we saw many guys openly drinking from beer bottles inside and
outside the shop!!! That scared me since some of those guys will be diving
and steering the boart for us the following day!

Never to dive with Black Shark again. If the divemaster can not trust
their own guys with the tip that tells a lot about the lack of trust among
everyone else including the owner in the shop!

Comments: I was very lucky 10 years ago when I first learned to dive, to have wondered into the Black Shark dive shop in Cozumel.
I do not remember the number of times I have traveled to Cozumel, more than 50, less than 100, and each time I return to the Black Shark.
I have never been given a reason to go elsewhere.
Over the past 10 years I have met many divemasters at the Shark, some of whom I remain in touch with. They are a great group of people.
If you want to dive with someone you like and someone you can trust go to the Black Shark.
Hope you read this Rangel, as I am going back to Cozumel on November 10th, guss who I will be diving with?
See you in Cozumel....Lynn

Comments: This was our 3rd time diving with Black Shark.  After our first trip, we'd email the shop and set up our diving so we'd be ready to go as soon as we get onto the island.  We've never been dissapointed with the service from the happy DMs, Captains, and guys in the office.  They're all more than happy to make YOU happy.

Herberth has been our DM of choice, however Limber, Hector, and Jose are also great DMs.  Captains Javier, Carlos, and Jorge always know where to be to pick you up.

Once all divers are picked up and on the boat, you collectively decide on the dive sites for the day.  I don't think that there's a bad dive site in the Cozumel waters.  The coral and sponge are beautiful homes for the fish that live there.
Your dive is restricted by your air consumption and dive tables.  If you are diving with a computer, you use that rather than the tables.  When you or your buddy gets to 700psi, you inform your DM and begin your ascent to your safety stop.  Then you'll soon be greated by the happy captain who somehow can trace your bubbles.

During this trip, we also completed our AOW dives with Humberto.  He was very thourough and helpful when we had a question.

We were on the island for 11 nights during this trip and had seriously intended to try at least a few days of diving with other shops.  But we found no reason to.  We were having great dives with Black Shark, and they guys are wonderful to hang out with.

See you next time.  We've only been back home for 2 weeks, and we miss all of you very much!

Comments: My wife and I dove for the very first time this past week.  Our travel rep "apple vacations" recommended we dive with black shark dive shop.  I am very happy he did so.  We trained in the "class room" for 2 hours before the first dive.  OUr instructor miguell was exteamly careful to insure we understood every piece of equipment and all proccuedures before we even entered the water.  After our first dive off shore he took us on a boat to dive a second run.  The experance was aweinspiring, and I would recommend this dive shop to anyone.

Comments: Only booked one day with them, only because I was leaving shortly after I discovered them. Tried Dressel Divers first since I was staying at Iberostar. Great resort, but skip Dressel. Black Shark picked me up on schedule at 9:15am at Iberostar's dock. The two-tank trip was only $55. They asked US where we wanted to dive. We ended up starting at Columbia Deep Reef  which had beautiful coral formations and several short swim-through overheads. We stayed around 80-90ft. The second dive was on La Francesa which was slightly north of Columbia. The coral was smaller, but the fish life was much more plentiful. That dive was about 50-60 ft. Bottom times were limited to air consumption. I reached my NDL limit on the second dive before my air ran out so I took a nice slow ascent while I enjoyed the view. What's great about the drift on Francesa is we surfaced right in front of Iberostar so it was a 3 minute ride back home.

The boat is a small 6-pack and it was fast. More time diving, less time boating. They had plenty of water and soda on the boat, included in the price. If I make my way back to Cozumel, I'll book 3-4 days with them.

Subject: Humberto is Awesome

Comments: My husband and I have been diving with Humberto for nearly 10 years. He is wonderful to us and our friends we bring from either Houston, TX or Provo, UT. We follow him where ever he goes. There are other dive shops that rent better equipment, but you want Humberto with you whether you are a beginner or a Punta Sur diver. Bring two other couples and request him and only the 6 of you - he will make it happen! You will be safe and you will have the time of your life.

Another trip to Cozumel found me diving once again with Black Shark Dive Shop. From October 13th to October 23rd I thoroughly enjoyed diving the deep and seeing all those familiar underwater sites that Black Shark has taken me to see so many times. I salute this dive operation for providing me with some terrific memories.

My husband and I just got back from Cozumel, where we dove with Black Shark.  We would not recommend to ANYONE, especially beginners!

We are both beginner divers and had never dived more than 35 feet.  We went out with Black Shark and made sure to tell the DM that we are beginners (and a little nervous).  We requested to dive with him, although he said he'd be staying with the entire group (a group of 10 people, most expert divers, plus the DM).  He told us that we would only go 40-50 feet the first dive, but we actually went more than 80 feet (which he had planned the whole time - he said he just didn't want to scare anyone).

Before our FIRST dive, I noticed that my husband's tank was loose. Luckily, we pointed it out to a crew member who fixed the problem. During the first dive, the DM had to fix another problem with my husband's tank (which appeared to be coming apart from the BC, not just loose strap).

Before the SECOND dive, my husband heard air leaking - the DM had to replace the "O" ring on the tank.  During both dives, the DM was far ahead of us, as we ended up last in the group of 11.  Air continuously leaked in and out of my BC and my husband's BC, which required constant adjusting.

After the dive, which we had booked through our resort and fully paid for the dive and equipment, the DM told us that we owed him $20 more each for our equipment.  We were the only 2 on the dive that he said this to (although all the other divers paid the same amount we did). When we told him to come up to the resort to discuss it with the person we paid, he declined.

I have concerns about the safety of their equipment, their concern for the safety of their passengers, and their honesty.  I would not use again.

I Usually travel to Cozumel once a month, recently May 28th - June 6th, 2001 and have never felt the need to switch Dive Operators.  I was lucky to have picked the best one the first time out two years ago, Black Shark Dive Shop.  Rangel, the owner, with all the help from his dive masters and instructors; Humberto, Pedro, Herberth, Hector, Limber, and Erwin always have brought me and my crew back from diving alive with big smiles on our faces and eager for more.  And, as you can read, I remember the names of those who do me right. Of course, the operation involves other great guys like Baby, Bird, and Luis coordinating our other activities because diving isn't the only thing to do in Cozumel.  The small groups and the personal dive service are quite appealing to my group of divers, Samurai Scuba Divers International where our motto is "Dive Before Dishonor".  Keep up the good work, Black Shark.

We've got certified with Black Shark. Liked them, especially Pedro, great dive instructor. Will use them again.

My wife and I did a 2 day, 4-dive package with Black Shark June 7th and 8th. Fast boats - small groups. We are both beginners and this was our 1st dive in over a year.  Dive master (Herbert) was very careful and explained things very well.  Made us feel very comfortable.  We used their BCs and regs.  No problems.  Herbert assembled and checked all the equipment, even for those who brought their own.  When he noticed a diver had a small leak in his personal reg HP line Herbert provided him with another to use.  Great dives. I would use them again.  No experience with Sea Urchin.

Black Shark Dive Shop www.blackshark.net     DIVE BOATS -small, fast, blue sheltered roof over for sun protection , and lights for night diving .CREW- just wants to spoil you, they remember how much weight you carry from the previous day,  they set up your tank, bring the gear to you  and help you don your gear, change tanks in between dives and tear down your gear at the end, for you to pack u p. THE CAPTAIN-follows the air bubble so there is never a swim back to the boat , he brought the boat to us. (A lot nicer than the  way we do it back here in New England wherewhere we have to swim)  BOTTOM TIME- limited only by your air consumption or your max botton time allowed for depth, we( 4 of us) have computers so we were down for the maxium time for our personal dive profile.when the buddy teem ran down to 700#  psi your suppose to start your ascent to your safty stop, this was nice due to the air suckers had to wait for us on top to finish .our abt averaged about 50- 60 min per dive, depth up to 95' we were the last out of the water on every dive DIVE MASTER- Luis 14 years diving the reefs, very sharp eye for spotting and pointing things out,  i think he knows where all the fish there live,we swam through some tunnels and at the end he stops to show us a nurse shark in a cave off to the right where a sudden pig pile happened and he was laughing DIVE GROUP -4 for 3 days and 7for 2 days and 6 for 1 day, night dives were mon 4 of us and fri there was 6 , no crowding at all   DIVE SITES - we were asked every day ,we let the DM decide and was never disappointed.Would we use Black Shark again, off course ,we had nothing but a good time, crew we found to be friendly, funny, experienced, helpful as well as professional.
