Cozumel Scuba Diving Trip Report
Posted by tom on 09/21/01

dive report...

Went to Coz Sept 1-8. We stayed at the Fiesta Americana and I dove with Deep Blue.  I started diving Sunday and we headed to Palancar Gardens for the first dive. Monstrous heads of coral climb to the surface. Crowned with red gorgonian fans and enormous yellow sponges.
What a great way to start the diving.       Second dive we headed to La Frencesca. We back rolled in and began our flight. The current was strong and ended up almost at Santa Rosa. Saw three nurse sharks.
Monday brought Chris and Kim and we talked to Matt (Deep Blue) about our other dive site choices for the week. We were looking to do Punta Sur, Maracaibo, Barracuda, San Juan and maybe Islota if the conditions were good. “No problem we go there” was his reply.
Our first dive Monday was Columbia Deep.  Awesome swim throughs. The coral formations were very impressive.
For the second dive we elected Punta Tunich. The current was slow and gave you alot of time to explore. There couple of nurse sharks in the overhangs. The DM found us a sea horse. and spotted a scorpian fish.  He lifted the scorpian fish off the bottom and out of nowhere a huge grouper appears. He makes a lunge at the scorpian fish but loses it as it hides. Then he just hangs out waiting for someone to find it again.
Tuesday takes us to Maracaibo. We're the only boat at the site as the DM goes over the plan. Max was set at 130'. We're diving it as a group.
The current was quite strong coming over the wall. I was the last out of the boat and was finning hard to catch the group. At 107' I feel narced. The DM signals OK? I signed back I'm leveling off and went back up a bit to get my head back.
They were down at 130' and I tried to follow them. Then all of a sudden they were gone. Now I'm thinking of the Hitler youth story. Was I really following them? Or did I imagine it. I start to fin keeping my eyes lookin for bubbles. I'm thinking I have a safety sausage but we were the only ones out here. There were some swells. Would the boat see me? Suddenly I a feel a tap on my shoulder. It's Gabriel the DM asking why am I kicking so hard. Turns out they went through a arch in the reef and came up behind me. I enjoyed the rest of the dive over pristine coral mountains.
Second dive we headed to Punta Sur shallows. Turns out one of the girls diving got a little to close to the red that dive. Gabriel suggested we do something shallow. It was a fun slow dive. The viz wasn't like normal for Coz but exploring the coral heads found alot of flamingo tongues and bristle worms.  There were also some really nice Elkhorn Coral formations. A large ray showed up at the end of the dive.
Wednesday Kim and Chris took the day off to spend with the family they brought down. I went out with the other group they had diving. We did Palancar Caves the first dive. Some of the divers were new to diving. One alomst back rolled onto me and another tried to kick my reg out. Saw four turtles to make up for that.
Second dive we did Los Palmas. Found a couple of seahorses and a splendid toad. Suddenly Gabriel signaled shark. I didnt see the first one but he quickly pointed out over the sand again. Off in the distance I saw it. Black Tip Reef Shark cruising over the sand. Five minuets later he spots the next. Awesome!
Thursday brings Punta Sur. Pepe takes Gabriels spot because he smashed his foot with a tank. Kim and Chris are back and we head out. Pepe suggests doing it without lights. "It's good with lights but better without." He was right. Only problem was I missed the cross. We went through the throat twice and explored some swim throughs.
Second dive was Yucab. Tons of fish life here. About halfway into the dive the current changes and we head back over the same area we just came from.
A look in every crevice kind of dive.
Thursday was also Dee day. We headed over to La Ceiba at 3:00 to meet Dee for a shore dive. It was good to see my bud again. Dee can't wait to get wet and she and Shelley are in the water. We're the first in the water and head towards the plane. The current was strong on the way out but slowed down after we reached the plane. After an hour or so we headed back in. A couple of yellow stingrays, some big arrow crabs and the schools of grunts made it a fun dive.
We decided to bag the night dive because alot of the group that Dee was with were talking about diving it. Way too many divers. We decided to just do Ernestos and go to town instead.
Friday was Barracuda. WOW! We headed over the wall and began flying.
Talk about a pristine reef. I got a little ahead of the group and ducked behind a coral head out of the current. I looked for a dead piece of coral or something to hold onto but there was none! We stayed together as a group and surfaced with the boat right there.
Last dive we did San Juan. Same kind of current which Pepe said was about 4 knots. Off and flying again. Watching fish try to maneuver in the current made me smile. Ever see a fish tumble? There was a nurse shark but no stopping in this current. Besides the camera flooded this last dive. We cruised along and watched a sponge that broke loose and looked like a tumble weed. What a way to end a dive trip!
