Tamarindo/Amaranto Bed & Breakfast

Posted by Ralph Osborne on 02/13/04

Subject: Tamarindo/Amaranto B&B's, Cozumel

The buildings at Tamarindo and the more dramatic Amaranto appear to be sculpted and a step inside the door of any room greets you with the pleasing colors of a living space that looks far more expensive than what you bargained for.  Everything - linens, mosaic tile, decorative ceramic sinks, hammocks, wide-head showers, chairs, tables, beds - has been assembled by someone with exceedingly good taste. They really have the hot water thing figured out - lots of it and decent pressure, a Caribbean miracle.   The biggest reason for visiting, however, are the owners, Jorge, the architect/builder and Eliane, whose talents for creating a warm, elegant environment were nurtured in her native France. They are urbane, witty, charming, sophisticated, and very well-traveled. Anyone can open a B&B, very
few can run one successfully, and fewer still can make you feel right at home while respecting your privacy. Eliane and Jorge put real meaning into the term "accomodation."  It's like going home.

- Ralph Osborne (stayed 3 times at Tamarindo, 3 times at Amaranto)

Comments: I was there the last few days of my honeymoon and stayed in amaranto.
We had a huge room with "palapa" roof, a romantic (and really necessary!!) mosquito net around our big bed.
The owners are reaaaally kind and the location is good: far from noises but close to resturants...
We really had a good time there, and not just because we were on honeymoon.

Comments: This is a BEAUTIFUL, unique B&B on a quiet street in San Miguel. Terrific, friendly and extremely helpful hosts. The rooms are basic but charming, many with small refrigerators and great decor. Hot water and pressure were always available (a huge plus!), and the breakfasts served by Eliane (the hostess) were homemade and delicious (fresh fruit & juice daily, crepes, eggs, quesadillas, muffins. etc. on other days. And an UNBELIEVABLE bargain--in low season (August) I paid $35 a night for a room with A/C and full private bath. I'm going back to Cozumel in January with a group of friends who insist on being beachfront, so we're staying at the Costa Club (but I'm a little sad not to be returning to Tamarindo!) There is a sister property, Amaranto, which I didn't see but I think is similar, except all rooms are in palapas.

Hi,
We stayed and Palapas Amaranto in the summer of 2000 and really enjoyed it.  Each palapa has a microwave, small refrigerator, coffee maker, and dishes so you can eat in if you want.  It is very convenient.  A short walk to the plaza or the waterfront.  We dove with Diving Adventures, right down 5th.  We considered it a good value option.

Greetings from Illinois!! We are looking forward to our second visit to Amaranto and Tamarindo in Cozumel. We stayed there in February of 2000 and had a great time.  Both places are very clean and a great bargain for travelers who don't need a lot of frills of fancy hotels.  Accomodations are fairly simple, yet very comfortable.  Jorge and Eliane are great hosts.  They are good, trustworthy people.  We liked Amaranto the best, our room was complete with a coffee maker, small fridge, air conditioner, a few dishes and a hammock. Both locations are a short walk to the plaza.  Jorge and Eliane were great to help us with directions, car rental, recommendations and anything else we needed.  Reservations are easily made via the internet and they are quick to respond to emails.  We give them a thumbs up recommendation and would welcome any potential guests to email us.  We look forward to a return visit to Amaranto and Tamarindo.

Hi Paul.  My son Chris and I stayed at Tamarindo in Feb. (the same owners and extreamly nice people). We met a couple who had moved from Amaranto to Tamarindo (simply because they had booked late and had to make the move to accomodate new arrivals). According to them, Amarindo is quite lovely and met their needs completely. There only complaint were the mosquitos. This problem was solved by simply turning on the air conditioning which unfortunately one doesn't need at this time of year. Mosquitos were not a problem at Tamarindo (I only saw one in a week!)

Hopefully you have been to Cozumel before and realize where Amarindo is located. If not, you are in for a big treat. You are living with the local people who are absoutely wonderful. A must place to eat is Las Palmas just a few blocks from you. The food is great and the price even better!

Jorge and Eliane will help in anything that you may need or want. Enjoy!
P.S. Don't forget to play minigolf!
