Comments: We stayed at Casa Jen December 30, 2002 - January 6, 2003.
We found our overall stay on Cozumel great. The house was good with
the exceptions that the jacuzzi wasn't working (and probably hadn't in some
time) and the barbeque grill could not be used. Other than than we had
an excellent time. There was more than enough space for three children
and four adults. We found the neighborhood quiet (except for Saturday
night, there was a party near) and easily accessible.
Casa Jen is not located on the beach. However, if you're wanting a
house on the beach in Cozumel, I wouldn't waste your money to upgrade.
Stay somewhere like Casa Jen and just drive there.
All the island natives were very kind and accomodating no matter where we
went and we always felt safe, even on the other side of the island (which is
where we spent most of our time). Our house representative, Xavier, was
most pleasant and fulfilled our every need, as did our housekeeper, Aida.
We wanted to bring her home with us!
Two major negatives about Cozumel in general. 1) The ferry! Spend the
extra $$ and fly in. 2) The cruise ships. Going into town while
the cruise ships were in port was pretty much miserable. Sooo many
tourists in one place and the shops increased prices when the boats were in.
The best shopping for authentic souvenirs is on the other side of the island.
There were so many good restaurants we ate at, too many to list. We
spent New Year's Eve at Carlos and Charlies with the kids and had a blast!
All-Inclusive resorts are nice, but I highly recommend a house when you're
traveling with children.
Comments: Vacationed from March 16-23, 2002, with 10 adults aged
20-22.
We had an outstanding stay. Cozumel is one of the most beautiful islands
in the carribean, as compared to Puerto Rico, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, and
La Hispaniola.... the beaches are so isolated and gorgeous, prices are
all very reasonable, and the island is not yet completely commercialized.
As for the Casa Jen, Aguila Rentals were very accommodating. Our house
manager, Xavier was soo friendly, very informative about all the sights, tours
and attractions on the island, and always prompt about any problems that we
reported. Our house help... Addie... was wonderful... (we miss you addie)..
As for the pool, a guy came every other day to clean it up, although we
couldn't understand him and the pool wasn't too too clean, it was
acceptable.... we refilled the hot-tub with fresh water, and warmed it up with
the solar cover everyday...... (fit 11 squished people in it !!)
Someone delivered drinking water everyday (without additional costs)? and when
I approached Xavier about bringing home an oversized, rusty old restaurant
sign, he volunteered to pack it himself!!!
Cozumel was very safe? I felt completely comfortable walking by myself at
night? and the house is secure as well?. You get 4 sets of keys and a garage
which is very useful for car rentals? (which cost about 30 dollars a day for
very very crappy bugs)
There was a grocery store (Chadreau) a block away which had very reasonable
prices? It takes about five minutes to walk to the downtown area, 5 minutes to
the closes snorkeling area? although we rented a car to go to the nicer
snorkeling areas and beaches. The best beach we went to (completely
isolated) with white sands was on the other side of the island? about 30-45
minute drive? When you?re in that area, definitely visit Coconuts? and the
coral reef?. This is very important so listen carefully --- there?s an
amazing taco place called Seras where you can have a ?pastor? for 4 pesos
(around 40 cents)?. It?s sooo good, but don?t eat there every night --- my
friends got montezuma?s revenge and vowed never to go back there?.. but I
loved it. Bars ? the bar scene isn?t that happening in Cozumel unless
you have a thing for 14, 15 year old girls? but it was fun anyway. We
went to Senor Frogs and Kiss my Cactus most of the time. One night, we
went to Cancun -- which was a hike?. It took an hour ferry ride, and an
hour bus just to get there?. But if you wanna party, that?s where it is? we
went to this place called La Boom where Jonathan Peters (??) was DJing?.
As for outings, my friends say the Tulum-Xel-ha tour was amazing. As for
me, I went to see Chitzen Itza which was a 3.5 hour drive (take a plane if you
can)? it was really amazing since we happened to be there on the vernal
equinox?..
The house is definitely enough to have a great time in?? We want to go back to
Cozumel as soon as we can !!!!
Comments: We just returned from a trip to Cozumel (Dec 29 - Jan 6, 2002),
and stayed in Casa Jen. Our group consisted of two families (4 adults, 3
kids; ages: 11, 11, 12).
I have separated my comments into "complaints" and
"compliments".
Complaints:
We were somewhat disappointed in the house in general, and certainly
disappointed in the service of Aguilla Rentals.
One of the principal reasons we chose the house was because of the backyard
hot tub. Prior to reserving the house, I specifically asked,
and received confirmation, that the pool and hot tub were in working order.
When we arrived at the house, Havier, the staff
greeter (a very pleasant, helpful fellow), told us the hot tub did not
work and had not been working for some time!
We also found that the hot water tank, supplying hot water to the upstairs
shower, one of the downstairs showers, and the kitchen
did not work properly. When we tried lighting the gas-fired tank, it
almost exploded! I called Aguila about it the first, second, and fifth
days, and they assured
me that it would be taken care of, but no one ever came out to investigate.
We wanted to barbecue some food, and there was a BBQ grill, as advertised, but
there were no grates for the grill. I called Aquila 4 times,
each time receiving complete assurances that a person would be out
"in 30 minutes" with a cooking grate or new grille. And of
course, no
one ever showed up. We finally made do with some baking cooling grates
we found. However, they are thin metal and won't last long.
The pool was quite dirty when we arrived, and also quite cool (I guess it is
unheated), so no one wanted to use it. On the 5th day, a maintenance
man came and put chlorine in the pool, which cleared it up a lot, but he told
us we couldn't use it for a day. It finally warmed up enough on our
last day that the kids went in for a little while. So, since a pool does
require maintenance, and it didn't really get the attention it needed, and
although it was in the low 80's every day, the pool never warmed up, the
pool was really of no use to us, and we wouldn't rent a house
with one again.
The ads for the house say that the upsatairs bedroom is a queen bed, but it is
a double (I'm 6'1", and my feet hang off the edge of a double!).
Final complaint: all the advertisements for Casa Jen say it is a
"brand new house", but it certainly looks "well used", and
not at all new. There was
graffiti on the walls outside; the concrete around the pool was discolored and
well-scuffed; a table in the utility room was broken, a
much-needed kitchen light was out (and of course, "a man would be
out to fix it in 30 minutes!" again -but never happened!), the
ignitor for
the stove was broken, and required a match to light (but no matches were
provided in the house!), and a bunch of
bananas just getting ripe, were cut off and removed when we left the
house one day.
Compliments:
Generally a nice house. Good sized rooms, well decorated and appointed
with good (if squeaky!!) bedding, nice furniture, and kitchen table.
Kitchen had goodly number of pots/pans/glasses/plates,cutlery, etc. Nice
garden outside. Good maid service from Addy.
Conclusion:
If the house were better maintained, or decent service obtained from Aguilla,
the house would be worth the money. As it is, in my opinion,
I would not rent it again.
Note: it is quite a long walk (10 blocks or so) to the town center, but good
for an after-dinner walk!
