Casa Las Flores

Posted by Rob on 11/13/01

I had the privilege to stay at Casa Las Flores during the week of Oct. 27, 2001 through Nov. 3, 2001.  We were actually booked to stay at the Villas Palmas Reales, but the owner sold the villa a couple of weeks before we were to arrive.

I am so thankful to have worked with Lisa at Cozumel Vacation Rentals, because she promised either a full refund or an upgrade to a deluxe home for no extra charge.  Anyway, Casa Las Flores turned out to be a stunning property.  It was about 8 miles south of town.  It cost us $10 by taxi to get there, so we ended up renting a car for the week.  It's a great home because it is so secluded from the downtown of Cozumel.  As we drove up the rocky road, we were absolutely amazed at the place.  It's a house that's basically been carved into the jungle.  The wildlife and beauty surrounds the villa on all sides.  The villa itself was very spacious.  Both upstairs bedrooms had private balconies that opened up into a center balcony to share.  (great to stargaze over the ocean!)  Although it was only 3 bedrooms, they were very spacious and it felt like each bedroom was the master one.  The villa was also equipped with TV, VCR, video library, satellite, and a 5 disc cd changer.  The pool was also a nice size...but please don't jump in head first into the shallow end.  It's maybe a foot deep, at best on the shallow half of the pool.  There was daily maid
service and the pool was cleaned each morning.

The best part of the villa was the view.  Although it lacked a sandy beach, it offered some great scenery.  We did find a place to get into the water for snorkeling a couple of days.  Plus the rocky shore offered lots of places to explore and see wildlife.

In fact, on the first night there, I had a hard time sleeping because it kept sounding like someone was trying to break into our screen door.  I couldn't see anything though, so I eventually ignored it.  Well, the next morning we awoke to find a HUGE stone crab(?) stuck between the screen
door and the glass door.  Evidently he was trying to break in!  Plus, when I looked out a little farther, there was a huge white crane staring at me eyeball to eyeball.  What an awesome first morning of excitement!  Plus, there were more lizards around than you could even count.

For diving, we were able to walk to the Reef Club pier.  It was just a couple hundred yards down the road, and the dive boat would pick us up right there.  The best part was that the reefs were from 2 to 15 minutes from us.

This is so much better than the 30+ minute boat rides from the dive shops in the north part of the island.

I would definitely come back and stay at the Casa Las Flores.  It was a fabulous villa.  The only drawback was its distance from the town.  I would suggest renting a car, because there isn't much in the way of shopping anywhere near the villa.  If you do decide to use a taxi instead, there's always one waiting for you at the Reef Club.  But, be prepared to spend as much as $10 each way to get into town.  To make things easier, definitely consider the cook service.  We did and found it to be the best meals we had on the island (besides El Moro).  Plus, we could finish our dives, kick back with a beer or two, and move ourselves all the way to the dinner table for
a huge meal.  It doesn't get much better than that...!
