Comments: I used to stay here all the time but the last couple of times just wasn't satisfied.  Seems like the hotel is drawing alot of "trailer trash" non diver types.  Prices have gone up and the rooms havn't been remodeled for years.

It's a nice, clean, small hotel with nearly no english spoken and very hospitable hosts.  They have nice gardens, a large parking area and a clean, nice pool.  It's location is the best.  I don't dive so I can't help you with shop info.
However, my Uncle and Aunt stay at the Aquilar from Feb. through April teaching and DM'ing through Scuba Club (i think!).  They take divers out 2ce a day, and a bonus is that my Uncle is the top UW video guy in the State of MN.
Good luck, have a ball!

Downtown hotels are a great way to save money and be close to the action.  However, you should note that they are typically bare-bones hotels with few amenities and would probably equate to a 1 or 2 star motel in the U.S.

Since I usually go to Coz to dive, eat, sleep, repeat, I don't mind the downtown hotels, especially at <= $35/night.  I have stayed at Hotel Aguilar and found it to be fine. It was fairly clean, and the rooms had beds, 1 dresser, A.C., and a bathroom with hot water.  That's about it.  If you go for Aguilar, request a room in the back, away from the street noise.  I think you may also be able to request a small fridge in your room.  When I stayed there in '99, the front desk lady spoke little to no English and was fairly surly, but you only deal with her at check in and check out.

You need to determine the amenities that you're looking for and the price range in order to find a hotel that suits your needs.

I stay there all the time, rates come down as occupancy drops or length increases. Additional benefit is off-street parking for your rental.

I've stayed at the Aguilar a bunch of times.

The air conditioning works, they have refrigerators in the rooms, and the cleaning staff border on the fanatical.

There's a large pool, a wading pool and an outdoor shower for rinsing off after snorkeling or diving.

It's kind of like home away from home for me now.

My favorite moderately-priced downtown hotel is Aguilar.  It is small, maybe 25-30 rooms, clean, basic, has a nice little pool and wading pool in an interior garden, lots of balcony/patio space for drying wetsuits, etc.  It is within 3-4 blocks of a dozen decent restaurants, including Coco's, which is THE best place for breakfasts downtown, Prima, La Choza, Casa Denis, Joe's Lobster House & Reggae Bar, Ernesto's Fajita Factory, etc.  I have always been able to negotiate a reduction in the daily rate for multi-day stays (I usually go in the low season).  Ask for a room away from the street for a quieter, more pleasant stay.

Happy hunting!
