Comments: stopped here due to tourist books.  won't do it again.  we ordered a
shimp appetizer (which was very good) but had to battle the flies and
extreme heat on the beach.  service was the slowest found on the east side and the price.......much, much too high.  check out other east side  options first.

Comments: We had the seafood platter at Chen Rio.  Not only was it expensive ($40) but we both got sick later that night from the food!  We spent the entire next day sick in bed and missed our dive.  There are too many flies as well.  They have a beautiful beach that you can swim at, so stop by for a beer and then move on.

Comments: Wish I had discovered these reviews *before* my trip.  The food was
ok, but far too expensive.  They didn't have menus, just pictures of the dishes on the side of a building (which is fine, but no prices are posted).

I probably should have asked what the prices were before I ordered.

The service was poor.

Review by Jack (trip July 20-28 2001):

We were disappointed. The prices were high. The food quantity and quality were less than we were led to believe. The waiter seemed pushy and phony. The service was poor. The beach was nice and the location terrific. But Mezcalito's is better all around, and Punta Morena isn't fancy but the food is better and cheaper.

Chen Rio is way over-priced for average tasting food. We rented scooters one day to tour the island and decided to try Chen Rio for lunch.  The owner/waiter was very pushy with the "I'm your best friend, I'll take care of you" line.  We asked how much for the seafood platter for two people and he told us, "For you only $47 for 6 lobster tails, six prawns and fish." He even agreed to include a few drinks in the price.  When we only got 5 lobster tails and prawns he said, "Oh, it's 500 grams so sometimes 5, sometimes 6". (As if he has a scale weighing these as they come off his boat!)  The food tasted fine, but not great, and definitely not "the best in Cozumel" as some guidebooks will tell you. When the bill came, he charged us for the drinks afterall. (The $3 glass of wine was about 4 sips worth.) Then we overheard him telling the couple at a differnent table, "For you only $52...." Chen Rio is a complete scam for mediocre food.  Avoid Chen Rio and try one of the other choices on the East side of the island.

It's wild, it's wonderful.  You just have to be careful especially if you want to go swimming.  We packed a lunch, stopped at Chen Rio: make sure you know exactly what you are paying before you order.  We just had a beer each, and then continued on.  It is a great experience because it is so different from the other side of the island.  Lots of nice little secluded little beaches if you can just can find a place fo pull off the road.  Be careful, but enjoy!!

But definitely, Chen Rio was top notch (if you can go to the other side of the island).

I agree that the seafood is good, but it sure isn't cheap (by Coz standards). Me and my friend had the whole fried snapper, shrimp, 1 margarita and 1 cerveza, and the bill was $30. That's not much less than a much better meal at Prima's and I don't have to eat with one hand and swat flies with the other at Prima's.

Just at Chen Rio last Sunday. The water was very rough, lots of Mexican families out enjoying the day. Waiter very pushy. As soon as he realized we only wanted a cerveza pushed us off on an older man that was good to us. The flies were horrendous and there was no way we would eat there. Washroom was passable by Mexican standards.
