Cozumel Island Guide: Shopping
Shopping is the largest industry on Cozumel Island. Cozumel has three
main shopping areas: along the waterfront downtown, the crafts market
behind the plaza in town, and the cruise ship passenger terminal just south
of town. In addition, there are numerous shops in and around San Miguel.
Shops are generally open from 9 am to 2 pm and 5 pm to 10 pm. However, many stores near the pier will stay open during siesta hours and most
stores are open all day during high season. Busiest times are from 10 to 11 am and 1 to 2 pm, due to cruise ship passengers.
Shoppers will find a large variety of items:
-Duty free shops
-Mexican handicrafts
-Jewelry (gems as well as silver & gold)
Black coral products are also available but black coral is an endangered species.
Purchasers may choose to pay in cash, either in pesos, US dollars or traveler's
cheques. Mastercard, Visa, American Express, Diners Club and Discover cards are commonly accepted although the first two are more readily accepted then
other credit cards. Use of credit cards are usually subject to a surcharge.
