Glass Bottom Boats

Posted by Cindy & Kenny on 10/29/00

We were in Coz. Oct. 16-23, & we went on a glass boat snorkeling/tour.  I was not impressed with the boat itself.  It had two glass bottom openings, about 5' by 3' to look down into the ocean.  You really couldn't see that much, except for alot of star fish, beautiful blue water & once in awhile coral.  But then again We were in the water snorkeling when the boat stopped, so I don't know what you could really see at these times.  It probably was pretty cool, since the fish & coral reefs were great while snorkeling.  The boat stays close enough to the snorkelers.  The dive instructor was very good, we went to 2 reefs, Columbia-25 ft. & Palancar-50 ft. saw huge tuna, 2 big barracuda's a monaray, & many other multi-colored fish that I have no idea what they were. It cost us $35 a person for about 3 hrs. There was one girl on the boat that could not snorkel, & stayed on the boat the entire time.  She didn't look too impressed.  Hope this helps.

We have used Ocean Tours a couple of times.  Really nice people and a good snorkeling trip.  Their website is www.cozumel-diving.net/oceantur. Hope this helps.

Usually the boat take you to 3 or 4 reefs, allowing you to snorkel the reefs while the nonswimmers admire the view through the glass bottom.  It's a good way to see the beauty of the reefs if you're not a swimmer or snorkeler.  We took my inlaws on the Palapa glass bottom boat snorkel tour 2 years ago and they loved the boat viewing while my wife and I snorkeled.

We took a glass boat boat tour last year and it was really alot of fun but it was also a snorkel tour. I really took this one so my Dad could see some things because he doesn't swim, The view from the boat is not great but we did see some neat things but the snorkeling was awesome!!!

We went on a snorkeling trip on the Principe, which was a glass bottom boat.  There were 4 rectangular windows and you could see the bottom and reefs well.  We went to Palancar and Columbia reefs.  I think your kids would enjoy the trip as long as you knew you were going to a reef.  Otherwise you just see sand or shell bottom...and once in a while a starfish.
