Isla Mujeres

And you're easily talking a three-hour trip both ways -- 45 minutes or so for the ferry from Coz to Playa. Another 45 minutes to an hour on a bus from Playa to downtown Cancun. A 10-minute cab ride to Puerto Juarez, where you catch a ferry to Isla Mujeres. The fast ferry costs $35 pesos and takes about 15 minutes to cross. The slow ferry costs $22 pesos and takes 45 minutes to cross. I haven't taken the slow ferry in ages -- seems a fast ferry is always at the dock or about to arrive. Private boats will take you over, but you'll pay much more and will take a lot longer to cross.

I just returned from two weeks (10 days in Cozumel and 4 days in Playa del Carmen and Isla Mujeres).

I found the island to be delightful.  It's much smaller and much more laid back than cozumel.  About the only thing to do there is sit back and relax.  We did visit a sea turtle sactuary which was quite interesting and took a day trip to Isla Contoy which I would definately recommend.  Isla Contoy is a small island that has become a bird sanctuary.  Apparenty there is no water source on the island so no preditors exist for birds.  This results in thousands of beautiful birds calling Isla Contoy "home."

If you stay in Isla Mujeres, stay close to north beach as it is wide with wonderful sand.  There is very little night life if your looking for that sort of thing, but many nice restaurants/bars in town.  It seems that the european crowd prefer Isla Mujeres and Playa to Cozumel.  Have fun!
