Snorkel and diving are not good at playa del carmen. Although playa del carmen is a great beach for swimming it is not for snorkeling and diving.
The beaches at cozumel and the reefs are good. there are lots of coral and fish even right off the beaches of
cozumel. You will be very impressed.

Like everyone else said, the only way to get there is to take the ferry. Playa
is great for just lying on the beach (the beach is beautiful) having a few
beers, a snack and just people watching. It is an interesting bunch.
Much different than Cozumel, which is pretty conservative. Lots of
topless Europeans walking around (and some Americans).
