Punta Molas Light House

Posted by Shell on 12/13/00

When we went on the Jungle Tour a year and a half ago, we made it about two-thirds of the way down the coast -- could see the lighthouse but didn't go to it. The road up until then was pretty poor and very narrow, so I can only imagine it's the same or worse to the lighthouse. I know that you can rent a dune buggy in town, but don't know if they allow you to go all the way to the lighthouse.

The reef is not something you'll be able to find easily on your own if you've never been before. If you've ever been to the museum, they have a light-up map of the island and it clearly shows the reef. That would give you an idea of where it's at. I'd say that it's roughly halfway down the coast. It's not visible from the road -- at least not from where we stopped to enter. We parked just off the road and hiked up a steep sand dune with jungle on both sides -- when you rounded the top, there it was, breaking about 1/4 mile offshore. No scuba tanks needed here -- the reef almost breaks the surface and is fairly shallow. Lots of opportunity to bang into something or fin off coral. Our guide said that she sees sharks probably once out of every 8 trips, but we didn't spot any that visit. She took us to the backside of the reef, facing open ocean, and said that's where they sometimes congregate. I scanned the outer edges, but nothing. Sigh.
