Trip report from a cruiser (Yuck!)

Well, I haven't been able to convince the family to spend a week in Coz vs. cruising (just finished our 4th cruise & I'm burned out on it), but here's the few wonderful hours we spent last Thursday on the island.

First, I can understand the disdain that Coz regulars have with cruise ships. Last Thursday, due to bad weather throughout the Caribbean, several ships were diverted to Cozumel. On this day, there were 8 ships in the port !!!!!! Bad weather elsewhere, beautiful in Cozumel.

Well, my plan was to head to Dzul-Ha for sun & snorkeling, but as we got off the ship, there were two huge groups from Norwegian Cruise Lines getting ready to head there. I also knew Chakanaab would be packed with this many ships in, so I made the strategic decision to pay the few bucks & go to La Ceiba. And a good decision it was. After the 6 dollar cab ride, we paid $10.50/person for use of the facilities. This was up from $7/person last year. I suspect they charge this much to discourage us cruisers, but on this crowded day, it was well worth the price. We had the place virtually to ourselves. My wife spent most of her time in a hammock and me & the kids snorkeled. Great beach snorkeling !! Tons of brightly colored fish in the very shallow water. Saw one squid (saw a buch last year), some sand dollars, but the coup de grace was I saw an octopus !!! Just hangin' out on a rock for a long time. Very cool.

Better stop now, I'll tell you the rest in a little bit...

So, after a couple hours of fun at La Ceiba we decided it was lunch time. Well, from my readings on this board, I knew just what to do. Walk a block or two north of La Cieba and guess where I am ?...That's right, Ernesto's Fajita Factory. What a great relaxing lunch ! I had a couple margaritas. Wow, were they strong, but very tasty. My wife & sister opted for Sol's. We ordered chicken fajitas and several appetizers. Very tasty. The bill for 5 of us (3 adults, 2 kids)including two drinks for each adult came to about 55 dollars. Tipped the waiter very well, so what does he do before we left ? Comes to the table with a bottle of tequila & a hard hat. Starts filling the shot glass about half full, then tops it off with Sprite, gives it the ole "uno, dos, trey" (forgive my spelling if incorrect)and smacks the shooter on my head (with hard hat on)and I swig it down. He did a couple rounds like this.

Back to La Cieba pleasantly buzzed, a little more snorkeling. Wife went to Diamonds Intl. a bought a tanzanite bracelet. Hmmm...I think this is why she kept encouraging me to get another margarita and to do more shots.

Then back to the ship. I hated to leave. Good news is I think they are convinced to go back & stay a week sometime in the not too distant future.

By the way, my 11 year old daughter informed us that she will be getting married in Cozumel, I told her I have just the person to organize it. So, Stephanie, some day we may meet :)
