Cozumel Trip Report

Trip Report Feb2-5
Casa
Del Mar Hotel
My first trip to Coz was all I had imagined it to be thanks to this board and
all the tips I received. There was no way we could see or do EVERYTHING I had
read about, but thats why a trip for next year is in order.
Our non-stop flight from DFW to Coz was smooth, however the 45 min.wait in
customs was annoying.Once through, however we were wisked away by taxi to Casa
Del Mar Hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the rooms adequate, but the
beds a bit hard(sorta like concrete...)
We did have a free breakfast buffett every morning, but you had to be VERY
selective of what you ate. Some things just did not look too familar..My only
complaint was they served the coffee AFTER you had your breakfast halfway
eaten. It really should be the other way around..Oh well,it was free after all.
[:-0)
The little store just next door to the hotel had the cheapest sodas and snacks
compared to the bar and reaturant at the hotel.I just cant see paying 3.00 for a
coke. There was no need to change $$ to pesos cause everyone takes US$ and
will give you change in US$ if you ask them.
Our first stop was Ernestos for Fajitas.I learned very quickly to sign the
travelers check EXACTLY the same at the bottom...they tend not to accept them if
you dont!!!)The meal was very good though and we made time for a shore dive
at "Dive With Martin"in front of the LaCeiba. We had dinner at
the hotel and it was pretty good.(CAUTION...avoid the ceveche...tasted odd and
smelled funny too..hummmm)
We took some nice clothes to donate to the Church and hopefully get some
comps, but noticed the next day that our "donations"were hanging from a
"20% off" rack.They did,however give each of us a t-shirt from the
shop.
The reef systems currents were very strong and our DM said that the moon phase
combined with the time of year made for challenging waters. We dove Sat. and
Sunday and each dive was different from the last. No more than 7 people on the
boat. The night dive was awsome and the transition of dusk to night was very
apparant in the calm current of La Francescia. Our DM handled a mid-size octopus
as if it were his pet.. My favorite reef was Paradise due to the large quantity
of fish.
I took a 3mm suit but found it unnecessary in the warm water..a skin worked just
fine..I will leave it at home next year, but will bring my own regs and BC.
On Sunday, after the last dive,we all took a taxi to town and walked the streets
in search of bargains. Some shops would deal and others would turn their back on
you if they thought you were trying bargain with them.We managed to find
treasures to take back home, and dined at Palmeros?? across from the
waterfront.Good food and good service..(my boyfriend says avoid the fried
chicken tacos, very bland and lots of heartburn, poor dear Chuck)
After lunch we managed to lose Kirk, but he managed to get a taxi back to the
hotel for a nap!!My cousin did find a great deal on a tourqious chess set...the
vendor wanted 130.00 to start and cuz ended up with it for 70.00...Way to go
Randy!
The guys wanted tattoos and decided to do it,but was dissappointed to learn the
shop was closed on Sunday...darn the luck...
Monday morning came much too quickly...We checked out at 1030a and a taxi
whisked us away to the airport, but not before a scenic trip of the city.I think
our driver was going for a good tip,and he got it.
The airport was very easy to get around and I really enoyed spending all the
rest of my pesos at the perfume store...and the t-shirt store...and the liquor
store...well you get the idea..
The flight back to DFW was great, and I highly recommend using Adventure tours.I
will use them again when I return to this unique place called Cozumel.
