Allegro-
Although I had read some conflicting reports, we got a great deal to go AI
this trip and decided to try it. I was not disappointed! I think I
could sleep on top of the potty room at Paradise Café though as long as I was
in Cozumel (and if you've ever seen this place, you know how bad that might
be!). Anyway, the rooms were very comfortable. Maybe a little
small but we only showered, slept and J in there so how much room do you need?
It was cool, clean and the beds were comfy. The food was good to
very good. I'm not a picky eater but I would think anyone could find
something from all the choices on the buffet at every meal. There was
always a choice of fish, beef, chicken and vegetarian dishes, along with a
pasta bar at lunch and dinner. There were tons of breads, salads and
desserts to choose from. Some things were better than others but
considering I gained 7 pounds during the week, I certainly can't complain!
The two "reservation only" restaurants were great! If
you stay at the resort, don't miss making your reservation. The only
issue we ran into was that sleeves were required in all restaurants and closed
toe shoes in the "reservation only" places (both of these
requirements seem to be for men only). The grounds and pool were
beautiful and exceptionally clean and well cared for. The staff was
great and always willing to help with a smile! The beach area was very
nice with lots of lounge chairs and easy entry into the water. We never
snorkeled so I cannot comment on how that is. We also were too pooped to
go to any of the entertainment or parties so I can't offer an opinion on that
either. I would not hesitate to stay here again considering the great
deal we got although I did feel somewhat removed from the real island
experience until we got into our vehicle and got away from the resort!
Dive Palancar-
Upon reading some good reviews, we dove with the Allegro dive shop, Dive
Palancar. Once again, no complaints! They have very nice boats and
keep the divers to 8 max per Dive Master. It was so nice being so close
to the reefs! We dove at Palancar Gardens, Cedral Wall, Columbia, Cedral
Pase, Palancar Pennacles, Yucab, Palancar Horseshoe and SanFrancisco Reefs.
We saw beautiful coral, tons of fish, shark, turtles, octopus, crab,
etc… I did see one thing I've never seen before - a Spanish Lobster -
on our night dive. From the top, it looked a little like a flounder but
with a hard shell and it had a tail like a lobster. From what I
understand, they are rare so maybe I got lucky! We dove with several
different DMs and all were great.
Fun things we did-
Once again, we rented a vehicle for the week (I love having the freedom to
come and go whenever in our own vehicle). We rented a Chevy Sun from
Avis for $137.00 for the week. We picked it up and returned it at the
airport so we also avoided the "Suburban" experience! It was
sort of like a Tracker but more of a car with sunroof and no roof over the
back seat! It was a fun car and very comfortable even with 4 people!
On Friday night, we met up with some other chatters: Angela, John,
Christi, Denise, Gary and his wife, Suzie and her husband. We watched as
Suz went through all the stuff that John brought down! What a trooper he
is! John, Christi, Steve (my hubby) and I all went to Prima for a fun
chat and dinner. We then met up with John and Denise to go do our turtle
thing on Saturday afternoon! It was so nice to have Denise to translate
for us as Santiago didn't speak much English! Digging those baby turtles
out of the nest was something I will never forget! I wanted to take one
home but I decided it wasn't worth the 20 years in jail I'd spend if I got
caught! We all took lots of photos and are hoping they come out! On
the way back to town, we stopped at John's favorite bar (I cannot tell) and
had drinks and a fun time talking and playing with the kitten. We had
planned to go to Manati for dinner but it was closed so we met up with Gary
and his wife, another guest at HSM named Linda and we all went to Sonora
Grill. We all had drinks and a great dinner and just sat and talked for
a while. It was so nice to put some faces with names and I hope to meet
up with everyone and more people from the board in the future.
We also met Alicia and Chucco and looked around at the Bed & Breakfast.
It is definitely on our list of places to stay! It was so nice and
clean and they were so nice!
We used the internet place across from Plaza Las Glorias. It was very
cool inside and everything was in English and the keyboards are the same as
what we use in the US. It costs $2.50 for 20 minutes or less or $4.00
per hour. The computers were fast (compared to another place we tried)
and we were always able to get right on line. They also offer long
distance calling at a great rate!
Of course, we didn't miss our favorite activity of just cruising around the
east side of the island and stopping to play in the waves! There were
many surfers out as the wave activity was spectacular. Be careful
though, the undertow was severe!
One last thing, give yourself plenty of time at the airports. It took
over two hours in Dallas to get checked in and to the gate. In Cozumel,
the security is even tighter! They went through every bag, checked or
not! No complaints, we felt extremely safe but just give yourself some
extra time.
Once again, a great trip! We are so bummed to be home! We cannot
wait to go back!
If you have any questions, email me! Adios!
