Cozumel Trip Report Trip report Day 1 : Alicia's and Papa Hogs I will apologize up front for spelqing(sp)Photos won't be back until Tuesday so will post this now and do photos later. Left St. Louis early arrived Cancun and waited 3 hours will take new bus and boat next time. Got to Cozumel with marks from the window imprinted on our heads, can water really be that color? As we grabbed our bags and avoided the apple rep we saw Alicia and Chuco holding a sign with our names on it. I must say that we have never felt more welcome than we did that day, these people are wonderful. Since it was raining we shared the car with Chavita (does not like thunder) and off we went. We had been to Coz before and stayed at the Iberostar so we were a bit nervous about not being on a resort (more on this later). When we arrived at Alicia's we got to meet Randy (2 dots over the a) and his daughter. Side note: if I ever have a daughter I can only hope she has her head on as straight as this at 14. We had rented a jeep from Marlin and they brought it by no problems. The next 2 hours got a little hazy as a bottle or 2 of Tequila seemed to appear. Melanie was doing her open water cert in the morning so she did not play but did a pretty good job of babysitting. Talk soon turned to dinner and Manati came up so off we went in Randys bug no I did not drive as I had been drinking, remember (hic) We jumped out of the bug drooling only to find it was closed, his daughter was sick for a few days and he was catching up. We ended up at Cobalt Azul, food was pretty good music was nice , I don't remember what the price was. While there it rained I mean go build an Arc get the animals on board type rain. It was great driving home and watching the kids splash around barefoot. By now it was getting late and my head was starting to mention that it did not really like Tequila all that much so off we went to bed. Tomorrow Papa Hogs, Mels first dives, I do a shore dive and we meet the wedding planner (sorry Steph) Trip Report Day 2 Woke up this morning in the hammock, this was to become a habit. Had a wonderful breakfast, omelets with just about everything you could want in them, HUGE fruit tray and yes the reports are true the Guac is by far the best I have ever had, Melanie made me stop eating it by itself after the third spoonful. I had brought some treats down for Chavita however she was not found of them she ate one and then promptly spit it back out at my feet, oh well I tried. Off we go to Papa Hogs. I should say this first; 6 months ago, Melanie would not even consider snorkeling, while we were there last December, Mike got her to come try snuba one morning while I was diving, Next thing I knew she wanted lessons for Christmas and all new gear (I thanked Mike and cursed him at the same time). We get to the Hogs and are greeted just as warmly as if we were old friends, these are good people too. Mel went to set up her gear and go over things with Mike and I grabbed a tank for a shore dive. As I was diving I stayed close to Mike and Mel as I had no buddy and I really just wanted to play with my new camera, it is a real treat to watch a really good instructor in action, he is about as patient as they come. Her dives went well and she was cleared for the boat tomorrow. I don't fish but If any of you do the charter that was out had caught 3 Marlin that morning. We grabbed lunch with Blanca and went home to get cleaned up as we were to meet the "other" wedding planner back at Papa Hogs at 2:30. We get back to meet Fiona and we like her right away, she managed to put me at ease about the whole marriage and this is not an easy thing to do. We follow Fiona down to Nachi Cocom to check it out and WOW we are impressed, my eyes did not glaze over once even when they started talking about flowers (ok maybe just a little) Anyway I won't bore you with wedding details. We stayed there awhile and decide to head over to the other side of the island for the rest of the afternoon, ended up at Coconuts just watching the surf and sipping Sols, I look at my watch and realize it is Monday 5:15 HAHAHA rush hour..... I take another drink as I laugh and really just soak this up. Back home to get the sand out of our hair then back into town for Churros(sp) and the sunset. We tried Pancho's backyard for dinner and I was surprised, this was not on our list but the picture looked interesting. The atmosphere is incredible here very romantic and the food was done well, I can't remember what Mel had but I had some Mahi Mahi that was about as good as I have had. Tomorrow: My birthday, more diving and the famous El Moro!Trip Report Day 3 with photos this time Woke up in the hammock again and fell out trying to turn off the alarm clock, these things are a little high. We decided to drive over to the east side and check it out early in the morning. This was worth doing, not a person anywhere (not that it is ever crowded), watchng the sun come up is almost as good as watching it go down. On to Papa Hogs for the second half of Mels check out. Turns out there were 3 brand new divers with assorted family members who were already divers wanting to go along for the first time. Margaret gave us the option of going on the big boat with the new divers or going on the small ones. We took the big boat. Ended up with 3 Dive Masters for all of us, Margaret took the 3 new divers and Raul and Enrique took the rest. Total of about 10 I think. As I said before it was a treat to watch Mike with a student, now I got to watch Margaret, she is also VERY good. I did not take my new camara on these 2 dives but wished I had, live and learn. All went well and Melanie is now a diver! I will get more detailed on the dives tomorrow. Back to the shop and lunch with Blanca once again. Since it was my birthday I got to pick what to do....hmmmm......EAST SIDE! We spent the rest of the afternoon playing in the waves , getting some sun etc..Yes I am trying to get my shorts back on after a nasty wave. Back to Alicia's to get cleaned up, visit a little and then off to El Moro! GREAT place...EAT here. I found it interesting that our waiter spoke better English than we did. Prices were very good and food was perfect, I had Grouper that was longer than my forearm. After dinner I went to use the restroom and came back to find all the lights off, thinking they were closing told Mel we needed to leave but next thing I knew the waiters came out with Flan and 3 candles in it....Happy birthday was sung and fun was had by all that evening. We went into town to walk dinner off, shop and just kind of enjoy the evening. Trip Report Day 4 Our final day, then back to work. After trying to get Alicia to hire us so we can stay, we head down to the dive shop for breakfast. Can you say FRUIT PLATE kids? mmmmmmmm. We have Raul for a DM again today very funny guy and he was very good about keeping an eye on the new divers. We decided on Tormentos to start. Alright I have some photos here but keep in mind this was my first time with an underwater camera. I found that fish are not real interested in having their pictures taken, reefs however make very nice staitonary subjects.Us on the boat Current going one way ray going the other After Tormentoes we all decide on looking for seahorses, So it's off to
Paradise. I have 1 picture left in the camera and no extra film, yes I
know... stupid. Sure enough 3 Seahorses. This photo will be a real
test. There is a horse in there but I was too far away so you really have
