 Cozumel Trip Report
Posted by Deb on Jan. 8/02

our trip Dec. 30-Jan. 4th

Just wanted to let people know about some things we found out on our trip. We took an Apple Vacation, and even though we had a crummy flight time, 5am, it was nice that all the Apple people really helped us out all along the way. We went to Cozumel and had to catch a smaller plane from Cancun to Cozumel. A word of warning, the smaller planes only let you take on one carry on and one checked bag. There are no snacks on this smaller plane, so if you can't wait the 10 minute ride over, then get something before you leave. We did not change any money, and never needed to, as ALL merchants take American money, they prefer it. In fact, I had to ask for Pesos to take back as a souvenir, as all places give back American money. And no need to be able to speak Spanish, all the merchants, guides, and hotel people speak English. We stayed at the Costa Club, a three rating on the Apple Vacation. It is not a really fancy place, but was adequate for our needs. The beds, however, we hard, as they had no box springs. We had the inclusive, which I would recomend, otherwise you will spend a fortune in food and drink. The meals are not order from the restaurant, but a buffet with a limited amount of choices but good. There was American foods for breakfasts, and cooked to order omelets, good with the fresh salsa! Also fresh squeezed orange juice, yummy. The hotel was about one half mile from downtown, so we walked, it was good exercise to walk off all the food. But a cab ride was $5. We took the Wild Tour, the ATV tour to the other side of the island. It was fun, but a VERY bumpy road. The rider on the back gets thrown around. Our guides were good, young and funny. Be sure you can drive an ATV or you will have a hard time on the rough road. The other side of the island is beautiful, but we didn't get to see it much, mostly we were moving. Stopped to see two Mayan ruins, small ones compared to the mainland ruins. There are lots of shells on that side of the island, so take along a bag to put them in. I got about six big conch shells. The Plaza is fun, we shopped there every day. The bargaining is fun, they will pull you into the stores. Remember the rule is if they aproach you, it is okay to bargain. Some stores don't, you pay whatever is marked on the item. Sone bargains we got was Kalhua for $9.50 at Los Cinco Sols, at the far north end of downtown. Also Mi Casa had the best price on vanilla. I got $35 earrings for $15, and paid $25 for a hanging chair hammock. We got tequila for $15. DONT do the glass bottom boat tours! THe boats are little tiny things that get swallowed up in the waves and the glass bottoms are little tiny windows you can hardly see out of. We got terribly seasick and didn't see anything through our little scratched up glass. You can go the Chanuakab park on your own and see the same thing. My two kids, 12 and 17, did the Swim the Dophins. I would recommend it instead of the Encounter, as it is only $20 more and yo get to do more stuff, it is worth the extra. They enjoyed it, but would not recommend it for young kids, it can be a little scary. The weather got cool a couple of days, so we were glad to have brought jackets. Also the mosquitos bit some of us, so take bug spray. Overall, we had fun, it got us out of the snow, we got to see a different culture, and it is a beautiful place.
