I have only a little to add to the report below by “Cozdive.”
I too found the food at the Allegro to be more than adequate. It
was good. Not great but really good. The Italian restaurant
is pretty close to great. Get the Spanish coffee at the Mexican
restaurant. They do it right, with the appropriate show. I
had read that the liquor was watered. I did not find that to be
the case and the bartender outside of the buffet made a great Bloody
Mary.
The entertainment was a big surprise. This little troop put on a
surprisingly good show. As all have said, the grounds are
extraordinary. The staff really worked hard and left flowers all
over the bed and once left the towels on the bed shaped as two geese
kissing. It was a work of art!
I read one report some time ago from someone who thought the Allegro was
a rip-off. He said the staff was rude. I can’t imagine
what his demeanor must have been to get these people to be rude. They
were the friendliest hotel staffers I have ever come across. The
rooms weren’t the Ritz but I only slept and showered there. I’d
like to see them improve that a little.
At night I could smell the swamp next door but it didn’t bother me.
One thing that I’ve not read anywhere else is the incredible
cacophony that arises from the jungle next to the resort. Tree
frogs galore. One of those little buggers got in my room and it
started to sound off at two in the morning. Fortunately, it
wasn’t too hard to track it down and evict it. If you drive
towards the other side of the island at night, watch out for land crabs.
They’re all over the place and birds are in the roadway feasting
on their remains from encounters with cars.
The only exception I take to the report by Cozdiva is about the dive
operation at the resort. I’m sure the divemasters are fully
qualified and do a great job but as they were loading up, I was on the
dock mooing at them. It was a cattle-boat! Papa Hogs picked
me up at the dock and there were only four other divers besides my wife
and me. Dive Palancar had 16. I went out with Papa Hogs once
for some more advanced dives and there were three of us.
As recommended, I rented a Jeep for one day’s exploration across the
street. They were reasonably priced and new vehicles. I also
managed to make it to Sally’s Mini-golf. Go at night, it’s
very hot during the daytime but it’s real nice, they played our choice
of music and provided us with walkie-talkies to order drinks. Real
nice course, fabulous grounds.
A few other notes. I went a week after the WTC incident. Boston’s
Logan Airport was like a ghost town. They looked us over very
carefully at Boston, Houston and at Cozumel BUT at no time was my
luggage ever searched. People in front of me, behind me, but I
lucked out. Good thing, too because if I had to unpack the two
scuba bags, it would have taken an hour to reassemble them. They
were packed to make theft very difficult.
The Continental flight out of Boston was postponed allegedly due to
mechanical difficulties. As a result, we missed the connection to
Cozumel. Continental put us up at a nice hotel for the night and
upgraded our tickets to first class for the next day. Very nice,
except I’d be willing to bet that there was nothing wrong with that
airplane. There were only like 20 people waiting at the gate.
We were the only ones making a connection of any kind. Don’t
suppose I can blame them too much but I would have preferred sleeping in
Coz.
If I ever go back to Cozumel (I’d like to go to the Pacific next
time), I will most definitely go to the Allegro.
