Cozumel at last, 10:55 p.m., late, late, late. Who could ask for better
friends (Debbie and Rod Odette) that would check out the airport and find
out "they're late" and go to the Diamond Bakery for dessert
and listen to the local bands until it's time to come
back and pick you up? Got to Summer Place Inn, had to ring the bell and
wake Henny up to let us in. We're off to a great start.
Sunday, January 19 -
Cool and windy. OK Big Guy enough of this. Off to the Bital
bank, and Chedraui. Supllies are important. Nice and sunny in the
afternoon, relaxing day around the pool and meeting our new neighbours. Dallas,
Dan, Gord and Linda. After a few minutes of conversation Dallas
tells me they met us last year at Dzul Ha and we told them about SPI and they
are staying three weeks.
Costa Bravo for really great dinner. Nicely decorated, tablecloths,
candles, etc. Great grouper and shrimp. Mmmmm. Check out the
square and get churros. Oh yes! Not too many around and start
looking for tacka, tacka, tackas. No go.
Monday, January 20 -
Still a little cool. Bike to Club de Sol/Dzul Ha with the D's. A
little late so tons of cruisers and boats dropping off snorkellers. Found
the huge parrot fish. Lunch of Chillequillas and Huevero Ranchero
Burritos. Hey, one meal feeds 2 people. Cold Sol.
Great day. Bike to Asadero El Pollo on 30th. (kitty corner from Ace
Hardware) and pickup their chicken, rice, salsa, two kinds of onions and
tortillas. $60 pesos. Somehow we end up getting another supper and
lunch out of this. Candles, other guests and a
dinner meeting in the kitchen palapa. Somehow, over the next two weeks
we manage to have several "meetings" it the palapa.
Tuesday, January 21 -
Cool and windy. Nice day to shop and laze around the pool. It is
nice in our little garden outside our room. Shop Chedraui for steak,
potatoes and all the fixin's. Never did get the hang of buying wine in
Coz. We make our own and it all tasted worse than
anything we've ever made.
Trip Report January 22 - 23
Wednesday, January 22 -
Off to Tulum for the day. Walk to the 7:00 a.m. ferry to Playa. Took
about 22 minutes to cross. Checked in at the bus station and the Premier
bus to Tulum does not leave until 9:20 a.m. No way. Go north to
Calle 2 and walk inland to 15 Avenida by the park.
There are Collectivos (large white suburbans); go to the one in the front of
the line, a few passengers. Going to Tulum. Si. $20 pesos
each. OK. Wait until the van fills up and we are off. Cannot
believe this guys does not drive like a maniac. Drop some
workers off and eventually at Bahia Principe, fill the van with guests going
to Tulum as well. Great, relaxing, airconditioned trip.
We are not the first to arrive at the Tulum site, but darn near. Just
love this place. Took tons of pictures and after the first roll of film
ran out, realized had the camera on the wrong setting. Now, I have never
done this before. But I have never worn glasses
before either. So included here will just be a couple of favourite spots
we found there.
Standing looking from here I could just imagine people on the Calle and all
the little homes.
Walked back to the highway and took a Collectivo back to PDC. Different
driver, different story. At one time, we had 14 people in the van with
one woman sitting on a stool between the driver and a passenger. He was
a good driver and didn't speed, but he sure
made the most out of the passengers he was carrying.
I got the information about the Collectivos and where to catch them on a board
called www.playaguide.com. Their chat board is similar to T'notes with
tons of good information. Also, the following place for lunch. Ronny's,
on the beach between Calle 6 and
Calle 8 norde. Beautiful beach, nice palapa to sit under, cold beer, and
only one lonely cruise ship docked out in the water. Bano facilities
were in the Pelican Inn, spotlessly clean. Walked through
and checked out the little hotel on our way out. It looked
really nice and the people staying there seemed to really like it.
Found a neat little place off the main street. An artist was painting in
the garden and her work was displayed on the street front and when you
wandered in, the place was an Italian restaurant at night and she displayed
her art during the day.
Got Xtabentun in Playa a new brand that had a better cap on it, as the ones
we'd been purchasing at Cinco Sol leaked. As well, it was quite a bit
cheaper. Hopped on the ferry to return to Coz. Coming in to dock,
we counted 14 cruise ships. Yuck. All the
piers full and some docked offshore. Needless to say you couldn't move
downtown. Walked back to Calle 3 and then to 10 and it was deserted.
With help from Henny, ordered pizza from Nino's on Avenda 10. Great
stuff!
Thursday, January 23 -
Off to the pier at PLG to meet Isidro for a snorkel trip to Palancar and
Colombia Shallows. It's windy and wavey and we are to meet him at 9 a.m.
At 8:55 here comes the Makumba with Isidro, Victor and Felix. We
pick up two divers at the Reef Club. This is a
nice fast boat but it took us a little longer to get out there because of the
waves. We had two excellent snorkels. Saw the biggest barracuda
ever, it had strange markings on it. Felix found us a nurse shark under
a ledge, but only Dan could free dive down far
enough to see it. Felix also found us a sea cucumber and conch.
The boat was always nearby, which was a concern of one of the snorkelers.
There were lots of fish on Colombia Shallows along with spotted ray.
This was a great trip and worth every penny. Soft drinks and a beer on
the way home. This is not a party boat but a dive/snorkel boat. Between
dives Isidro opened the glass bottom and as we drifted along we saw starfish
and huge grouper. Would we do it
again, YES. For a quote you can email Isidro at diving@seaurchindive.com
Trip Report January 24 - 27
Friday, January 24 -
Cool and very windy. Isidro had told us yesterday that he thought the
port would probably be closed. Good day to shop and sit around the pool.
Purchased a few things downtown, but it's just too busy to move. Went
to the town market and got my tortilla
press and some dried oregano. Got the proper name for grouper (mero
fillets) from Joey and went to Chedraui. What the heck might as well get
lots of stuff.
Saturday, January 25 -
Once again only about 74 and windy. Back downtown to Zermatti Bakery and
walk back along Avenida 10. We meet a couple coming the other way and
they call across the road, "the cemetary is just up there".
I called back, "Thanks, but I don't think I need it yet."
They looked at us strangely and started to laugh. I don't know
what they thought we were doing.
Invited to the Ewings (JR and Susan) this evening for dinner. This is
always a great time. They have also invited Tim a friend of theirs.
Jim has made lamb currie and it is wonderful. Homemade mango
chutney and cucumbers in cream. That man sure can
cook. Susan and I get a chance to catch up. A whole year's worth.
They are telling us about their work at Casa Azora and what they are
doing.
Sunday, January 26 -
Get on the bikes and bike to Odette's. Ron is sick with bronchitis, so
we drop off the cocoa we've brought for Debbie and meet her father Charlie.
Off the Casa Azora. Holy smokes, changes galore. All kinds
of luxuries being installed. New lighting over the
jacuzzi, a fountain at the end of the pool, new solid cement palapas, counter
top outside with the BBQ built in so you have lots of room to work. I'm
sure I've missed something but I can't remember what right now.
Decide to go watch the Super Bowl at PLG. Go early to get established
and they have a Super Bowl Party going on. Burgers, hot dogs, on the BBQ
and of course the game. I get to take my sunset picture and it's great
as usual.
Walk to La Choza for a late dinner and find some cotton wind pants to go with
our jackets. Also get my Churros. Debbie had told us
where to find them at the stalls across from Casa Denis.
Monday, January 27 -
Bike out to Dzul Ha and it is so windy we decide it isn't worth it to try and
get in. People were getting bashed up against the wall getting out.
Spend a relaxing day reading on the deck and splitting a huge burrito
and a couple of Sol. The bike ride home was an
endurance test. Feels like a good night for pasta. Once again,
note from Joey to buy lean ground beef.
Trip Report January 28-30
Tuesday, January 28 -
Dzul Ha and we can get in. We are there by 8:00 a.m. Can't believe
how far back towards town the taxis are lined up to pick up
cruisers and the boats aren't even in yet. Great snorkel day and as
usual lots to see. Took awhile, but we found the parrot fish
again. Last until about noon and then the crowds start arriving. That's
OK home to get out cold Sols Terri and Kraig are arriving.
Kraig as one of the new arrival is taking the picture, so missing.
Debbie drops by with double chocolate cookies she's made with the cocoa.
To die for. This lady sure can cook.
Wednesday, January 29 -
It's cold again. I think Terri and Kraig wonder what the heck is going
on. The weather is really not what any of us are used to.
They take off for the other side. Stop off at Golfito to see Sunshine
and Sally. Give Sunshine a churro and she's happy. Get
caught up in a circle dance in front of Fat Tuesdays. The music was good too.
They sure were having fun. They kept yelling at us
to come back. Found the tacka, tacka, tackas and a dress for our
granddaughter. Back to see our friend who sold us the wind pants
and get our grandson a Mayan mask.
Thursday, January 30
Terri and Kraig are going to Playa Azul and check out the hotel and golf
package they offer. The town is just a mass of people.
We catch a cab past the square and go to check out the golf course. It's
one heck of a long way in from the road. Beautiful course, nice
club house, restaurant, etc. If you are staying at Playa Azul, golf is
included, cart rental is $23. U.S. per person.
Club rentals are $29. US. If you take the AI at Paradisius golf,
cart rental, etc. is one half off.
Meet Terri and Kraig at Playa Azul and spend a nice relaxing day at the beach.
Back to SPI, Terri makes a few calls and there's a casual dinner at Los
Arracherros, Avenida 10 between Calle 3 and Solas. Great beef tacos and
a great time meeting T'noters that
you chat with and post to but never see.
Back row, left to right: Terri, Cervezaleo, Joan (DiJo), Frances (Panchita),
Janie and Christi (Blue XT Sea Diving). Seated. Chas and Kraig.
Front. Dick
Picture thanks to Cervezaleo.
