Cozumel Trip Report Just got back - Mini trip report! We just got back and I wanted to give everyone a quick trip report - sorry, no pictures!Day One 7/23 - Arrived on the beautiful island at 6:30 - no red light - Yippee!! Got checked into the Allegro with no problems! There were 4 of us, but no double rooms, so they gave us 2 connecting rooms which was nice! We were in 2101 and 2104 - right next to the sewage plant. The smell was horrible about 50% of the time. Otherwise the room was fine. Be sure to stay away from the 2100 block of rooms. Dinner at the buffet that night - food was Ok, but we should have asked to be under a fan. It was extremely hot. Lounged on the very nice beach and drank some very mild, watered down drinks and went to bed early! Day Two - Got up early - Great breakfast (omelettes, pancakes, bacon) at the buffet! Lounged at the beach and snorkeled off the beach. I didn't see one fish! Checked out gear for the kids and was disappointed that we had to return it in 3 hours, or had to pay. We would have bought some snorkel gear before we left if we had know this. I really wanted the kids to see some fish, so we rented a jeep (from AutoRent - not a good experience - I'll discuss later) and went to Dzul Ha/Club del Sol (I think that is the right name). Had wonderful margaritas and quesadillas and saw beautiful large and small Parrot Fish, an eel and lots of other fish and coral gardens! Had a great day! Went back to Allegro for our 6:00 dinner reservations at the Mexican Restaurant. Even though they said no sandals for men, my husband wore them since that was all he had and they didn't say anything. I enjoyed the food and a REAL margarita, but my family wasn't too pleased. Service was very, very slow, but maybe we were just still on American time! After dinner, we went into town and enjoyed the wonderful people of Cozumel. Day 3 - Had a great breakfast again at the buffet (remember, sit under the fan) and took off to the East side of the island. BEAUTIFUL!!! We stopped at all of the sites and took lots of pictures! We visited Coconuts and had a Coke! I really wanted to try their famous Margaritas, but it was only 10:30!! Swam and snorkeled at Chen Rio and had great guacamole, salsa, chips and beer (it was 12:30, by then)! We saw some really pretty fish and a couple of flounder while snorkeling. The people there were wonderful! Went back to the hotel and "chilled" for the afternoon! Had dinner at Caruso's - the Italian restaraunt at Allegro. This was a wonderful meal! Angel, the head waiter, was very, very nice! Service was like that of a 4 star restaurant and my Cesear salad, beef filet in wine sauce and spinach ravioli was excellent! The others had lasagna and chicken alfredo! Everything was wonderful! This was worth the hour wait in line for the reservation! The Allegor enterainment was really good that night! The Michael Jackson impersonator stunned everyone! Day 4 - Took the Dive Palancar 4 hour snorkel trip on the Trimaran! It was 40.00/person and well worth it. I originally wanted to use Arrecifes (sp?), but I think they were booked. I am not so sure, since my Adventure Tours coordinator told me they were. I kinda think he just wanted me to book the trip with him! We went to a starfish area, Columbia and Palancar reefs. We saw numerous barracuda, parrot fish, dolphin fish and a huge lobster! The kids really loved it! Our guide was very good and we had a great time sailing back, drinking rum punch! Chilled by the pool and enjoyed watching the staff/guest water polo! Had very good burger and fries from the snack bar! Went into town to Panchos Backyard for a fabulous dinner! Everything was GREAT! This must be one of the nicest restaraunts in Cozumel! The service is excellent! We shopped in the store there (the Tequila is more expensive than in other places) and bought some things for our friends back here in Austin! Walked around town and found Sally's mini golf. WOW this place looks fun! I would have loved to stay and play, but the family was wiped out! Enjoyed meeting Ron Lee, Diane Noelle and the other Chatters friends. Again, I would have liked to stay longer to chat, but the family was ready to get back! I'm glad we left when we did, because there was a huge thunderstorm right when we left. The jeep kept most of the water out, but the lightening was unbelievable!! In summary, our trip was great, with a few exceptions - Allegro - Good for what it was (with the kids)! If I went expecting (and paying for) a moderate class hotel, I would have been very pleased. The food was primarily, just OK and the included drinks were not very good and very watered down. I'm really not a big drinker, but I was on vacation and I would have enjoyed having a real BahamaMama or Strawberry Pina Colada instead of watered down versions. The dark beer was good, but the tap was slow and the glasses were hard to find! Our room, though clean enough and adequate, had a very strong sewer smell most of the time since we were by the plant. AutoRent - Heard about this place on the board, but I wish I would have used National. The attendant said I had to pay $10.00 cash and the price was 65/day. They made me buy the insurance! I was going to just rent 2 days, but when I tried to return it, nobody was there! I called the main office and it took over an hour to get someone to come see me. Then when I tried to rent another day (at a slightly lower price, since I really felt I had been had) they would not budge! They charged us $65.00/day and they were very rude! I would not recommend them! Next time, I want to stay in town - maybe Villa Forte! The Allegro, though an OK resort, was a "canned" atmosphere! If you really want to get the true flavor of Cozumel, stay closer to town, or the Hotel Club Sol (??) across from Dzul Ha. That sounds really fun!
