Cozumel Trip Report El Cozumeleno trip report Just returned from a great week! My boyfriend and I were very impressed with El Coz and felt like we were living large all week. We stayed in the new section and were pleased with our comfortable, clean, and modern room. The staff were very friendly and responded well to tips, though they were supposedly included. We made reservations a couple of times for the restaurant and it was well worth it!!! They only serve 30 people per hour there, but it beats the dinner buffet which can be compared to a recycled VFW dinner. Be afraid, be very afraid. The entertainment at some of the buffets is great though, with lots of hokey games and cultural performances. Lunches at the sit down outdoor dining area are much better than anything you can get at the snack bar. Breakfasts are terrific!!! Room service is also included and we suggest you take advantage of this nice perk and dine from your balcony with its great view. The pools and hot tubs are clean, big, near the bars, not too crowded for the size of the hotel, and have great views of the beach, surrounded by coconut and banana trees. Reserve yourself a beach chair early in the day, since people seem to claim them for the whole day and leave the laterisers without seats. The night club at the hotel is DEAD and disappointing. It seems most guests go to bed early or step out to town.We were active all week. Our best times were spent snorkeling on a glass bottom boat tour and also at Chankanaab National Park. You can see the fish from the shore! It's awesome! Take a stroll through the Mayan village there for some historical ruins. They're replicas but truly convincing. There are a few fish at the hotel's beach, even more if you sneak some bread out of the hotel. We also went on the pirate ship cruise. FUN! Go for the booze cruise because the dinner cruise isn't worth it...the food is cold and well, not really enjoyed as you're swaying around balancing it on your lap. We also rented a car and went to the other side of the island...PARADISE!!!! We wish we had visited earlier and spent more time over there. Very rough waves, but you must check out Playa Bonita and Coconuts. Truly PARADISE! If you can schedule a trip for the full moom, the clubs on the other side offer huge parties. For evening entertainment we recommend Viva Mexico! Very energetic and FUN! The El Coz hosted a happy hour there on Friday night. The waiters really put on a show. We also visited Joe's Lobster House for some laid back reggea atmosphere. The house band also plays live on the pirate ship cruise. The only disappointing aspects of our trip were the dinner buffets at El Coz, the overpriced horseback riding, and the cab driver that ripped us off. Establish the fare before you step into the cab. Bring lots of dollar bills for tips, more necesssary than we thought. Also buy a disposable underwater camera before you come and don't expect anything to be inexpensive because the townspeople know Americans have lots of $$ to burn. Also...very important...bring some Immodium A.D. even if you are very careful about not drinking the water, it's a lifesaver!!! All in all, our vacation was GREAT! The people were very nice and accomodating, the hotel and pools were incredible. The beach at El Coz is one of the best we've seen. Great place for kids and families, though this kidless young couple had a blast. Lodging Reviews
