Not a lot to report on - due to the fact we didn't do much. I went with 4
others 2 women and 2 men. We really had a great time. It was my 4th trip so
I've seen all the sights and since all of us had been there before it was
going to be a non-touristy vacation...whew!!!
My co-vacationers were:
Paula...my good friend has been going to Cozumel since she was 14, about 15
years now.
Donna... also good friend and Paula's sister-in-law. She also has has several
trips to Cozumel.
Paul or Pablo as we like to call him (Paula's dad)...he's been visiting
Cozumel about 2-3 times a year since the late 1960's. So I would have to guess
he's ventured south of the border A LOT!
Then there's Jerry...he's Paul's good friend and he too has been there as
often as Paul.
As you can see, there was no need to do any sightseeing.
We left Cedar Rapids, IA at 8:15am on Friday April 5th. Flew air only on a
Funjet charter. Arrived at CUN in record time 2 hours and 45 minutes, at
11:00am. We zipped through the airport no problems with the food we brought
with us, except the pickle relish. The airport personell opened the relish up
and didn't tighten it back up, so when we opened our cooler in the van later
we found our beer swimmining in relish....kind of a bummer but we didn't let
it ruin our trip to Playa. Immediately we got a minivan (thanks to several
threads on how to get from Cancun to Coz). We arrived at the drop off near the
ferry at 12:45 WHEW! We were able to make the 1:00pm ferry and not have to
wait until 3:00pm with all our luggage. That was a high point of the trip. By
the time we got to Cozumel, got our luggage from the "baggage claim"
and arrived at our rental house it was 2:30pm. To summarize for you we made it
to our final destination from Cedar Rapids to Las Palmas in 6 hours and 15
minutes. Is that nuts or what. Typically to get affordable airfare, we have to
fly out of Chicago to CZM and it ends up being a 10 hour trip with driving
time from Cedar Rapids to Chicago.
We settled in comfortably and even had a few hours of sunning time before we
would go out for dinner.
Dinner first night was Guidos, I had the usual Spagetti Bolognese and Sangria.
Paula had same as me and everyone else had pizza. Yum, I could go for some
right now. After dinner we went to Tony Rome's. Had a few drinks and listened
to Tony sing. He really has a great voice. Then it was home to bed by 9:00pm.
What a bunch of fun haters we were...tehe.
Day 2: Paula, Donna and I went on a walk in the AM then hit Chedraui for
some grub. We typically put money in a kitty and buy groceries and beer with
that money. Got our groceries for the week and headed home to start our sun
worshiping. We hung by the pool and read most of the day getting up only to
grab a beer and maybe a bite to eat. We had a barbeque in the evening I
believe we cooked potatoes, garlic bread and steaks on the grill. Yumm! We
then did the nightly ritual of going to Tony's for drinks and music. Later
Paula and I went out and the other's went home. We hit the new Fat Tuesday's,
and Senor Frogs. Both were ok. Then we went into this place that sounded like
it was hoppin, however it was not. I think it was called the Habana club, not
Havana club. We felt so bad that no one was there that we stopped and had a
drink. Then home to bed, we knew Donna would have us up bright and early again
for a walk.
Day 3: very much like day 2, walk, hang by pool, drink and eat. The guys went
fishing, so I cooked some trigger fish on the grill for supper. It was
delicious. Then same old ritual down to Tony's for drinks then home.
Am I boring you yet?
Day 4:
Just a repeat of Day 3
Day 5:
Ah! Paula and I went diving with Sergio Sandoval. Great dive, we dove Santa
Rosa Wall. Nice nap during the surface interval and great eats. The rest of
the day was much like the previous days. However I believe we ate at Pepe's
that evening. Delicious.
Day 6: Guys went fishing, and We (Donna, Paula and myself) rented a jeep and
cruised to the other side. We stopped at Coconuts and a few other places. We
also went North to check out the new Country Club and Golf Course. We met a
few nice Gentleman there and had a nice time. That evening we cooked good Ole
Iowa Chops for dinner along with the usual potato and garlic bread. You know I
normally don't eat that good at home. After dinner, it was to Tony's then
Paula and I went out to really tie one on. We hit Viva Mexico, Fat Tuesdays,
French Quarter and Babalous. I think we both started drinking aound noon that
day and quit about 3:00am.
Day 6: A miracle occurred, no hangover for me. Paula had one but I had
to keep it a secret, the other housemates would have really gave her a hard
time. I decided that I only had 2 days left on the island, so I was going to
drink them away. Laid by pool, drank, read and slept. This was our last night
so we decided to try a new restarant and just to let you know we won't be
going there ever again. It was really bad. That's all I will say. Again Paula
and I (the pary girs) went out for a few drinks. This time we just drank at
the French Quarter. Then home, where we scarfed down some guacamole I had made
earlier in the day.
Last Day: Pretty much a reverse of Day 1, except no spillage of the relish.
Sorry if the report was a lacking luster, but we really didn't do a whole lot
and it was one of the best trips I've had to Cozumel.
