Cozumel Trip Report

Coz Trip  25 Nov-09 Dec

Returned home this past Saturday to 2 feet of snow and some "startingly nippy"temperatures.

I stayed at Alicia's and I am happy to report that Chuco still makes the best guacamole on the island and has added empanada's, potato cakes and the best breakfast quesadillas to his list of breakfasts. Chavita is still the most spoiled dog I know, but she is a great companion while I visit.

The temperature ranged between 76-80 for the 2 weeks.  There were constant northern winds coming out of the arctic, and this caused the low temps.  These winds also kicked up the waves, but out of 10 diving days the port was only closed to the small, fast boats on 1 day.  I went out on a large boat with 23 other people that day.  I had forgotten what it was like to dive in a crowd that size, but it was better than staying ashore.

And did it rain.  Just about everyday.  Not just for an hour, but several hours during the day.  The roads were under about 6 inches of water and we couldn't get anything to dry back at the house.

I dove with Deep Blue this time and I am very impressed with them.  They have 3 small, fast boats.  There is ample dry storage space for your stuff.  There is also plenty of water, sodas and fresh fruit on board.  The DM's were very good at spotting things and making sure that everyone got a peek.  2 different DM's found the smallest seahorses I have ever seen at different sites.  When you first tried to spot them, they looked like small pieces of algae or sea grass.

I was also impressed with Deep Blue for their assistance to me in my return to diving.  I had an unfortunate accident this past July in Cozumel and this was my first trip since then.  I had some limitations placed on me, but not too restrictive.  I had written earlier and explained it all to the shop and they were enthusiastic and offered to help.  Their enthusiasm helped my overcome my fear and after the first few days, I was back to enjoying the Coz dive sites.

I met Chas at Alicia's when he dropped by one evening.  I also met Rita and her son J from this board.  We went mini-golfing one afternoon and had a blast despite being rained on during the last half of the game.  The course is beautiful and challenging.  It was nice to meet Sally and Scott.

10 days of diving, good food, great companions and a wonderful place to hang my hat at the end of the day- who could ask for anything more?
