Comments: Trip Report

This is a long trip report, but worth reading if you are staying at the Allegro inclusive resort. We stayed there from June 1-8. This is my own opinion of the resort based on my personal experiences and observations.

The Allegro- First the good points. The grounds are pretty nice and the pools are okay. The beach is beautiful. So much for their good points.
The bad points- Let’s talk about the room. You will either stay in an upper or lower. We stayed in a lower room 4502.  It was close to the beach and the action, but our room like all of the rooms was very small. Our floor was wet and I had to kill 3 mesquitoes. Not a good start. We asked to move to an upper, which we were able to, the problem was that the uppers roofs are made of straw and the one we switched to had a hole in the roof and a medium size lizard living in the room. There were also ants on the floor and in the bed. We went back to our first room, good old 4502. The bathrooms were never cleaned; I know this because the mosquito I killed against the wall remained there for the 7 days we stayed at Hell. When they do clean the room, they leave your door wide open, so when you come back to your room, you will have to go on creature patrol. This means killing many flies and some mosquitoes. Other creatures that may be in your room are Lizards and Frogs; we shared our room with a lizard for 2 nights and a frog for one night. I found it helpful to place a towel under the door to keep the creatures out. The mosquitoes were ridiculous, my wife had about 30 bites by time we got home, If it rains there, which it did, the bugs will come out. Bug spray will help, but not much, but its better then nothing. Our friends had room 4512 an upper unit. There unit had a small refrigerator and microwave but they had less closet space. You decide which is more important.

The Food-
The Allegro has 3 places to eat. The Topaz room, which is the main place people, eat breakfast, lunch, & dinner. The Topaz served okay food, but after a few days you will go insane. The Topaz room has a roof over it, but you are basically outside. The flies were all over the food; we did not touch anything left out in the open. Get use to eating where flies have been, its very had to avoid. The other 2 places to eat are an Italian restaurant and a Mexican restaurant. You must make a reservation to eat at these restaurants and the rules at the Allegro are you can only eat at these 2 restaurants once per visit. You may get to eat there again, but you have to check with the jerk that controls the reservations at 4PM. He will let you know if they can seat you that day. We ate at the Italian restaurant, which by the way you must wear long pants for. The food was fine, but after eating in the Topaz room, it will seem like a treat. Whenever we ate at the Topaz for breakfast, the best meal of the day, we always walked out with a couple of boxes of cereal for snacking in our room  later. We did not eat at the Mexican place because it is out doors and we did not want to get eaten by the bugs outside.

Transportation-
Since the Allegro is about 8 miles from town, you will only be able to take a cab or rent a car or scooter. Cab fare to town is $17.00 for two or $19.00 for 4 people; that is a one way cost. We rented a car at the Allegro. The Volkswagen beetle was $39.00, the Metro was $49.00 and the sidekick jeep is $59.00. All are stick shift but the Jeep and you need to pay for insurance.

The Allegro-
The entertainment in the evening is a show that they put on which is more for kids, not entertaining at all. There is also a bar with 2 pool tables and 1 Ping-Pong table. The hot tub was never hot and always cool, which was nice because it was so hot, you needed the cool down. Drinking is the main activity at the Allegro, the more you drink the more the Allegro looks like a Hyatt. If your style is the Hyatt or Radisson or a holiday inn, then stay away from the Allegro. The water at the hotel is not filtered, but the ice in the drinks and the water they serve is. Leave a small tip for the maid and you may get an extra bottle of water. Please be aware of not being in your room anytime from 530 to 830 pm. This is when men with masks that  cover their nose and mouth came by to spray bug  killer. It looked like a fog when they were through. You don’t want to be in your room while they do this since the poison comes right under your door and through the air conditioner vent.  Mexico is an unregulated country so I don’t know what was used for the spray.

Mexico is a cheap place to spend a vacation, but remember you always get what you pay for. Unless you snorkel or dive, I think there is no reason to go to Mexico, there are so many better places to go. And yes my wife and I are still feeling Mexico everytime we go to the bathroom!
