This trip was a HS graduation present to my daughter, Hope. Of course it
had a few benefits for me as well! So it was just us girls.
We drove to Denver the afternoon before our flight, since we live in Nebraska
about 3-1/2 hours from DIA.
Took the shuttle from our motel near the airport and arrive at 6 a.m., find
Ryan International airlines, the line is long but we were on our way to the
concourse in about 20 minutes thanks to the Apple Representatives making
everything go smoothly. Security: Of course Hope walks right thru but it beeps
on me. They wave the wand around and it beeps at my sandals (that’s where I
keep my eyelash curler! ha) off my sandals go into a plastic bag to be x-rayed
and the wand also beeps at my waist area, geez, I’m not even wearing a belt!
After my sandals are okayed, we were off. Plane leaves on time and we arrive
in Coz. Apple rep gets us in a crowded suburban and we head to Park Royal. My
first impression is WOW, this is nice. The entry is grand, the grounds lush
with plant, trees, flowering shrubs, the pool winds around the bar-snack area.
We are on the 3rd floor of the tower, our balcony overlooks the sea and
usually 1 or 2 huge cruise ships, they are so huge!
My daughter decides to lounge by the pool while I get our car I had arranged
on the internet from Smart car rental. A guy picks me up at the resort and
takes me downtown for the paper work and I’m off in our little topless VW
bug. Later we decide that for the 1/2 price deal on the internet they gave us
the junkiest car they had, but we had fun with it. By the time we leave I had
the nasty clutch down a little better, never did find first gear and we did
entertain the guy at the entrance of Park Royal more than once by killing it
at the gate, he was always smiling when we drove up and saying something
in Spanish that we couldn’t understand. Probably something derogatory about
my driving skills!
Once back at Park Royal with the “Wonder Bug” I find my daughter at the
swim up bar. Later we try out the car, heading towards town, trying to find
2nd, maybe it’s 3rd! Anyway, were cruising along towards town, down shift
for the topes and the shifter comes out of the floor! “Oh sh*t, we’re
laughing and I’m checking the rearview mirror hoping a taxi isn’t about to
run us down from the rear, we manage to get the stick back into the floor and
off we go! Whew!
Checked out some shops, stopped at Carlos & Charlies for a drink and
decided to call it a night. Tomorrow: resort course with Papa Hogs
Trip report, day 2, sorry, long time since day 1
Today is our resort scuba course with Papa Hogs dive shop. I had arranged
this on the internet and paid the deposit. We arrive and meet the owners Mike
and Margaret. We filled out all the forms and read out of the PADI book. The
weather today doesn’t look very good, a storm is brewing with dark clouds to
the east, and it is sprinkling. Julie came over and introduced herself as our
dive master. We enjoyed her a lot, she moved to Cozumel a year and a half ago
from Denver, Colorado. After were finished reading we head over to the waters
edge and go over equipment and the basics. Then we get to put all our gear on,
starting with a weight belt, yippee more weight around the hip area! Then the
BC with the tank attached, put the mask on our heads, hang on to the fins and
then walk into the water trying to avoid the little rocks which wasn’t easy
with all that equipment on to an area deep enough that the gear wasn’t as
heavy. Checked our buoyancy, Hope sank to the bottom, but I didn’t, so I got
to add a little more weight to my BC! Then we practice taking the regulator in
and out, mask clearing and just getting comfortable with the whole idea.
Then it’s time to head out deeper to the shallow reef off the shore of Papa
Hogs, as we get out there Julie motions us to ascend. The current is the wrong
direction for a safe dive and we head back in. It is already a long swim
because the current took us so far. We decide to check back with Julie
in a couple of hours, but when we did it was thundering and lightning and Hope
wanted to wait until tomorrow.
It was lunch time by now, so we try La Mission in town. We both had the
fajitas, but that was certainly not all that we were served. First was the
bread , chips w/guacamole, then a chicken soup and finally the fajitas which
were very good. We were stuffed and then they wanted to know if we wanted
dessert!
Hope and I decide it is time for a trip to the other side of the island.
This is Hope’s first look as we pull up to the Paradise Cafe. She
wants to get in! We head on up the coast and find a good spot. We wore
ourselves out in the waves, jumped in the “Wonder Bug” all wet and
headed towards Coconuts. I had one of their delicious Pina Coladas and Hope
has Sex on the Beach (no! the drink). After Coconuts, the constant drizzle had
quit, so we put the top down on the Wonder Bug and decided to head back the
same way we came and stopped at another beach to play in the waves again. Must
have really wore Hope out, after a dinner of tostadas, cheese quesadillas,
chips and gaucamole, Hope went to bed at 7:00 and I wasn’t far behind her.
