Cozumel Trip Report

Allegro
Resort Cozumel
Trip Report: Trip date March 19- 26, 2001
After a 2 hour delay due to a broken
toilet on the plane and a sudden snowstorm we departed Calgary and arrived in
Coz under heavy rain. No problem..this is Coz right? It's warm and by the
time we went through immigration (got the red light - darn!) the rainhad stopped
and we arrived at the Allegro in time for the dinner buffet.
Day 1 greeted us with sunshine and wind and we were impressed with our first
daylight stroll through the Allegro's beautiful, and well maintained tropical
gardens. I booked my dives with Dive Palancar for the next day and hubby
arranged his flight/tour to see the equinox at Chichen Itza.
Dive Palancar was great and Gustavo, the divemaster on 3 of my five dives was
terrific. I didn't have a buddy and as a new diver, he made sure I was
comfortable and kept a close eye on me. First dive was to French reef...saw 2
giant green morays, 2 hawksbill turtles, a giant (and I mean HUGE) spotted eagle
ray, a 7 foot barracuda that scared the living bejeezus out of me and a 6 foot
reef shark. Other dives were to Cedral Wall, Cedral Pass, Delila reef and
San Francisco Wall. The dive crew were friendly, courteous and very
safety conscious. Bottled water was provided both before and after the
dives. Boats were big and fast and the nuber of divers varied between 5
and 8. I had read other posts on this board that Dive Palancar had
an "You're stuck here with us, so too bad" attitude but I don't have
anything but good things to say about their operation. Gustavo G.P. and
Jorge were really nice. Jorge didn't even mind the death grip I had
on him when a nurse shark brushed by us during a swim through! He laughed
about it afterward!
Back to the Allegro...the beach is very nice and clean. Super-soft sand
and much nicer than the Iberostar or the Reef Club or Playa del Sol which I
walked to on a couple of occasions.
We had a room on the 2nd floor in the 2800 building. Clean, no plumbing problems
like other seem to experience. We tipped the maid our first day and she
left us the extra bottled water and towels we requested for the whole week.
Rooms on the ground floor do seem a bit small so aks for a 2nd floor room
when you make your reservation.
Drinks were great, even if they were watered down. It wasn't until we returned
home that I realized I never once got drunk, despite consuming numerous
cocktails daily. Hubby chose to frequent the self-serve Corona tap and he
DID get a bit loopy on a couple of occasions. Only complaint I have was
about the frequent wait for clean glasses at the beer tap, water cooler and soft
drink machine. As well, the Allegro really needs to add another bartender
at the pool bar from noon to 6pm...one often had to wait five or more minutes
for a cocktail. Hint: stand next to the guy who's just placing his drink
order and say "Oh! I'll have a couple of those too!" as the bartender
will just make up a bigger blenderful of margaritas or whatever and you'll save
yourself a bit of a wait.
The entertainment team was a lot of fun without being pushy like they are at
some resorts and the kids in the Kids Club looked like they had so much fun that
we may take our two small boys with us next time.
Now, I've been to AI resorts in Cuba and the Dominican Republic and the food at
the Allegro was fantastic in comparison. Great variety and most dishes were
quite tasty. The Italian restaurant was very nice, the Mexican, not great
but not terrible either. The snack bar food was a bit on the greasy
side but hey, if you hate greasy fish n chips, don't eat 'em, right?
For those younger folks looking for night life, you may want to plan a trip into
San Miguel or stay at a hotel closer to town. We hung out in Fast Eddies
(the nightclub) 2 or 3 evenings and played pool and by midnite, the place was
empty except for us and the bartender. Pretty quiet.
Would I return to Cozumel? For sure - I never got around to visiting Mescalitos
on the other side of the island! I would definately recommend the Allegro
to anyone wanting a carefree AI holiday in a lush, tropical setting
