Trip Report
We stayed at the Paradises, last week Nov 12-16 2001, First day at DFW a
little before we were to get on our plane we were waiting in the
terminal and heard about the plane crashing in New York. I was pretty
nervous but found out that it was mechanical failure so felt a bit
better. Our flight was fine and landed on time. Got the green light and
we were off. When we got to the Paradises we asked for an upgrade on our
room from garden view to ocean view but they wouldn’t give us one, it
was going to be $30 per day so we stayed in the garden view. There
probably wasn’t even 75 people staying there. The room was nice
although we did have some mildew on our wall and ceiling, not real bad
but still some. Everything always seemed damp (high humidity). When we
arrived we were hungry so we went to the buffet; the food was really
pretty good every time we ate there. When I saw the ocean I was so
disappointed the water in front of our hotel was BROWN and gross. You
could walk down to the El Cozumeleno for clear water but I wanted it at
our hotel. No one ever got in it. There were guys cleaning up the
seaweed everyday but it was nasty the whole time we were there. I asked
the bartender how long it had been brown and he said about 2 weeks from
the hurricane. I guess they couldn’t control that. Well we made the
best of it. Got in the pool, it was really cold, sat on the barstools in
the pool until I think my feet and legs were numb. Tequila warms you up
a little though. Rest of the day just hung around the resort. We went to
the show that night and every night they were pretty good. We went into
town by taxi, our driver’s name was Jesus he must have drove us going
about 80 miles per hour, we all laughed about it and said it was a good
thing we were riding with Jesus. In San Miguel we stayed around the
plaza and just took in the atmosphere. Lots of guys trying to get you to
rent cars, timeshares, drinks, it reminded me of the Midway at the State
Fair of Texas. Anyway we saw Poncho’s Backyard and decided to eat
there the next night (our anniversary) it was really good although my
husband said he could have had more to eat. We got the shrimp. The hotel
gave us an iced down bottle of champagne for our anniversary, which was
a nice touch Next day we rented a Geo Tracker from the hotel it was $67
dollars for 24 hours $17 was for insurance. We were scared not to have
it. So we drove to the other side of the island, finally got to get in
the beautiful blue ocean. We went to Mescallito’s-- really really
great Margaritas, Couldn’t get drunk enough to pose naked by the Naked
beach sign but we saw quite a few who did. We rode around town hollering
Hola to all. We went to the supermarket and pharmacy, and to get a
little beer and cigars. My husband said we made him too nervous to drive
so we went back to the hotel and took a taxi back to Poncho’s
backyard, for dinner, we also shopped a little at the Cinco Soles.
Better prices were to be found several blocks of the Plaza. The last
full day we went on the Fury Catamarans this was so fun it really made
our trip. We got to snorkel the Columbia reef and the Palencar reef, we
saw lots of fish and plants I loved it, then they took us to the beach
and gave us homemade cheeseburgers and potato salad, we were back on the
boat in time to see the sun set it was beautiful. They played party
music on our way back and gave us cervessas and margaritas. Everyone was
dancing and having a good time. A must do! Last day we had to leave at
11:30 so mostly just packed and ate. Got a taxi to the airport, they
checked everybody’s bag there. Took away lighters and batteries,
which we thought was odd. Plane ride was fine back to DFW. Made it
though customs, no problem.
We all had a great time only major complaint was the BROWN water in
front of our hotel. I guess that was Mother Nature’s effect from
Hurricane Michelle.
