 Cozumel Trip Report
Posted by Laura on 02/08/02

Just returned from a 7 day stay in Cozumel. We stayed at the El Cozumeleno (see lodging report). For anyone interested in staying there, it was fantastic. We recommend it heartily. We were a group of eleven adults, we arrived on Friday, January 25th and sailed thru customs with no problems. Arrived at the hotel, checked in quickly, and were out by the pool with drinks in no time. Friday we spent just checking the place out, relaxing, enjoyed the hotel buffet and show that night. Partied hard of course.

Saturday am we checked in with Antonio in the dive shop. One person with us wanted to get certified, and my husband and I needed a refresher course. They have a free scuba class in the pool each morning, so they had us all jump in on that. Some of the rest of our crew gave it a try too. After some skills testing in the pool with Sondra, we were off for a shore dive down by
the Lorena hotel. When you take the free scuba class, if you like it, you can pay $60 and they take you on this shore dive. It's a nice way for people to decide if they like it enough to get certified, and also a great refresher for us recreational divers. Sondra is a great instructor and a lot of fun. Matt completed his certification during the week. After the dive, we were all off to do the ATV tour across the island. Antonio also set this up for us. the ATV tour was about 3 hours long, through the jungle, to some ruins, and back. We all had a great time, and I think they do have a shorter tour than ours also. Highly recommend this to anyone who may want to try it. After getting cleaned up, we split up into those too tired to go to town to eat and those ready to go. The tired group tried the hotel restaurant La Veranda with mixed success. 4 of us went to town to the French Quarter which was completely wonderful, wandered around town a little, then to bed early.

Sunday we met friends in town. They came over from Play del Carmen. We partied at Fat Tuesday's. A few shops were open, but most are closed on Sunday. FYI, drinking is very expensive at FT - $6 for a rum and coke. Food was so so. Headed back to the hotel to continue the party.

Monday the guys all went fishing, again booked through Antonio. Us girls went shopping, came back and lounged around the pool all afternoon.  We had the buffet and watched the show again this night.

Tuesday we lounged a lot, then went into town to Carlos & Charlies for dinner, which was very good, and some partying. It was hopping, but clears out fast when the cruise ships leave. There is a guy that goes around doing card tricks, which were completely amazing. His name is Kiwi Copperfield or something like that. He was a total hoot, check him out if he's there.

Wednesday we had planned on renting scooters to go around the island, but Antonio talked us out of it. The local saying is MOPED stands for Most Often People Endup Dead. So we settled for trackers (rent from the person Antonio recommends, we had no problems whatsoever). We headed off, stopped at Dzul Ha for some great snorkeling. Then on around, stopping at bars and beach clubs, playing in the surf. Stopped for lunch at one of the places, and the seafood eaters got big platters of seafood and lobster. Not for me, but they all liked it. Last stop was Mescalitoes and then back to the hotel. This day was tops on everyone's list of what they liked best.  A really great time! Everyone was so wiped they couldn't make it to dinner, so we all ordered room service and hit the sack early.

Thursday we did some more lounging, enjoying our last day. On Antonios' recommendation, we went to Prima for dinner. It was wonderful. excellent seafood, USDA beef, and some killer pasta. Wandered a little, then back to the hotel to party on our last night.

Friday, up for breakfast, a last couple of Kahlua and cream's then off to the airport to head home.

This was mine and my husbands 4th time in Cozumel. Once on a cruise, once on a day trip from Cancun. Two years ago we stayed at the Iberostar, and then this year. It was the first trip for the rest of our crew. Everyone had a great time, loved the El Cozumeleno and the people, and everyone plans to go back ASAP!
