Cozumel Trip Report Posted by ljcoz
on 03/02/02 Ahh the 19th is finally here. Time to head to Minneapolis for
the flight out!! Some drinks by the pool, and on the shuttle to the mega
mall for some more drinks. Had a good time at Hooters. Back
to the hotel early. Up too early, had to find somewhere to eat
breakfast at 1:30 am and be to the airport by 3:00.according to our
tickets. Started check in at about 3:30, boarded about 5:30,
de-ice wait wait. Snow and rain mix yahoo!! Left the ground at
7:oo we're on our way. Flew through storms the entire way down,
but all in all it was a good flight. Landed on coz at 10:45am.
Cloudy but we are here!!! Took some time to check out the Costa
Club beautiful hotel, and have some adult refreshments. We went
down w/ some friends who have never been there before, so after a few
more drinks we hit the streets. First stop is the new Carlos n
Charlies, I like the old one better, but I have never cared much about
that type of place. Our friends got pretty wild by there standards
but I've seen wilder. They had a good time so I was happy.
Usual walk through town. Yes it is changing. The Punta
Longosta mall is a little out of place but the cruisers like it I guess.
Looked for the hacienda San Miguel but couldn't find it, it was
one more block north. Back to the hotel for margaritas on the
beach. The women had SOLS. The sunset was gorgeous. We
went up to the room to get cleaned up and have dinner, but the
restaurant was closed? We are suppose to be a/i. Ahh they had a
buffet set up on the beach. The food was good and the skeeters
were hungry as well. Early evening everyone was beat. Day
two, Feb. 21.up early buffet breakfast was very good. The sun was
shining let's get to the beach. Off to Mr. Sanchos, this place was
very nice. Lunch and drinks, good prices, good service.
Played around in the water while the girls lounged in the sun, and
the sun was hot!! Gathered up our stuff and started walking north up the
beach. What is the next beach club I've never seen this place
before. But I have many times before, it is Playa Sol. My god has
this place changed! This used to be our favorite beach club on
this side of the island, but I didn't even recognize it till we walked
out of the entrance and saw the name. We got around the cover
cause we came up the beach, but it is like 6.00dlls for basic entry.
35-50 for the all inclusive deal. Catering to the cruise ships, I
assume. Back to the hotel for dinner, food was good again.
Head into town, our friends want to check out Senior Frogs, I've
got a good day full of Sols and margaritas, so my head is thumpin right
along w/ the music. Gotta find some place quieter. Up to the
square Casa Blanca, nice and quiet just off the southeastern corner of
the square. Heard scary things about the food here so we just had
beers and each one tasted way different. It's the place w/ orange
tablecloths. Beware…early night home by 11:00. Spend some
quality balcony time w/ the little lady. The pool area at the
Costa Club is beautiful. Wonderful lighting at nite.feb.22rd day
3…breakfast at the hotel again, I don't feel too bad about that as our
fav b/fast place is closed Ernestos. There is still one up by the
la ceiba but we didn't try it. We're heading to Cancun today, the
wife said we have been here how many times, and we haven't even seen
Cancun. We have to go!!! So were off to Cancun, went to the ferry
pier to get our tickets, and they said it won't leave for another hour
and a half. So off in search of the Hacienda San Miguel.
Found it today, met Angela, and toured the grounds. Very
nice place!!! We'll probably stay there next time. The
hummingbirds were gone though, but Angela showed us pictures that FTL
had taken, very nice…now off to catch the ferry, we're walking to line
up to get on and here hey you guys, its Gabrielle, he used to work at
the Sun Village San Miguel on the square where we used to stay.
Now he is promoting a time-share for the Mayan Palace near Cancun.
We usually do a time-share to help Gabriel out. He gave us
lunch, 150 us dollars, and a ride to Cancun. What a guy! He asked
me remember how to play the game?? I said of course. His brother
David met us in Playa Del Carmen and arranged our transportation to the
resort. My god this place looks like Disneyland!!!! This place is
going to be huge. Way too commercial for me, they gave us the
usual hard sell. You can get in for only 70,000 for 100 years.
I made it quite clear I wasn't interested, but my buddy kept
talking like he was interested. Funny thing is he didn't have his
credit card w/ him and I did. The agent was a little angry and
thought we rigged it. Funny…the one that was interested had no
card and the one that did wasn't. I made her pretty mad w/ the
over development speech, and how there was nothing for me to do here but
on coz. So we blew out of there w/ 150 cash us dollars. Off
to Cancun, wait it is pouring rain. We decided to head back to
playa. This is the most rain I've ever seen in my life. In
the space of about an hour, it flooded all the streets up into the
storefronts. The ferry is just leaving hop on back to coz.
Sorry honey maybe next time to Cancun. For the fifth try.
Hahaha. Back on coz still raining, 45 mph winds according to the
Spanish weather channel. They have some big Mexican party going on
in the lobby, very loud and crowded, I think everyone from the hotel is
down there. It's like 9:30 and we haven't eaten yet, off to
Palmeras for grilled chicken and pepitos. Pepitos are sliced
fillet on french bread w/ avocado, frijoles, and onions. Both were
delicious. Back to the hotel for some sack time. Day4 sat 23rd, Up
early to get a hold of the kids not open, bummer. Wait till later.
Figure well go to Chankanaab. Grab a cab and off we go, very
windy today, snorkeling, and all other water activities are closed.
Bummmmmmer! Cab takes us back to the hotel. Take
advantage of the all-inclusive drinks at the hotel for awhile and head
back into town. Wow is it windy, there is a boat sunk next to the
flag monument downtown. Fat Tuesdays for their kick #$% Pina
Coladas, the women shop. Enough shopping lets have dinner!
The New La Mission pretty cool place, huge. Lions and all
kinds of stuff. Wasn't overly impressed w/ the food, it was good
but very expensive. 28 dollars us for the seafood plate. But
it was worth it. Well it's just about 9:oo better get to kiss my
cactus to meet everyone. Chumley, Richard, scuba Jim, Debbie
Dallas, Christi, and of course ljcoz. We all had a great time,
everyone turned out to be really cool. It was one of the highlights of
the trip. It was good to meet you all. Back towards the
hotel, a few more cervezas, and its time for bed. Hope the weather
is better tomorrow. Day 5 Feb. 24 alright the sun is shining and
it is hot. Good day to rent a car and drive the island.
Gassed up and headed out the cross-island road. First, stop
San Gervasio Ruins. Never been there before not very big but
impressive none the less. Off to Mezcalitos, smelly, flies were
bad down the coast we go to all the usual stops. Chen Rio for
pictures on the rocks. A quick drink and on to playa Bonita. Same
thing flies were very bad. So we keep driving el mirador punta sur and
finally back at Mr., Sanchos. Nachos, fajitas, and more sols.
Starting to cloud up again, but we milk it for all its worth.
Back to the hotel to cleanup, and off to the square for the
festivities. This is all pretty quiet around the square so a few
more and off for home. Monday Feb. 25th. Beautiful morning
sun is out and very hot, off to Chankanaab. Spent the day in the
water snorkeling. We slipped outside the swimming area over
towards the dolphin pen w/in 2 minutes the dolphins were at the side of
the pen playing w/ us through the fencing, too bad they were locked up.
They were very friendly. We were under water and we heard this
banging. It was the guard telling us we had to get out of there.
Damn that was fun!! I hope to one day be able to swim w/
them in the WILD. One more tour down the shore and we have to go.
Were doing the wild tour through the north part of the island past
Mezcalitos towards the light house on atvs what a blast!!!! We did the
5:00 tour so we started off in the light and ended our tour in the dark.
Our guide's name was Freddy and he would stop to show us hermit
crabs, tarantulas, and alligator tracks. So after dark we stopped
by a little swampy are to look for gators. We crawled out on these
downed tree limbs with a flashlight over the water. Well guess who
had about 4 margaritas and fell off the log?? Yep…ME!! Freddy
said, "its not a good idea to fall in the water when were looking
for gators…" hahahaha we didn't see any. Finally, we get to
Castillo real wow what an amazing sight by the light of an almost full
moon erie. It was just a beautiful evening. On the way back
we were able to drive w/ the lights off, just the light of the moon
lighting the way. 35,45 miles an hour through the jungle at night
is awesome…I recommend this tour to anyone. Inquired about going
to the lighthouse the next day, 70 dollars each because we did the tour
that night but they were filled up until wed. We leave wed.
Our driver on the way home told us there was no power on the
island. And in three states on the mainland, sure enough, no power
anywhere. Costa club must have a back up generator. Oh well
gonna try Cancun in the morning. The wild tour is really cool try
it!!!!!!! Tuesday Feb. 26th. Looks like rain again! So
we decide to skip Cancun, finished shopping for the fam. That
done, we hookup w/ the people we went down w/. They decide to hang
by the pool as the sun came out and it was hot. We opted for Dzul Ha.
Got there it was closed. They sold me beers but would not
rent me any snorkel gear, I was dis appointed but we made it there. So
back to the Costa Dive shop. Got some gear and dove off the beach
at the hotel. Wow, what a pleasant surprise, the snorkeling off the
Costa was great. Big schools of fish like I haven't seen before.
Nice coves and underwater-lagoons. I stayed out there until
it was dark. Off to Sonora Grill for dinner. Lobster and
steak! Very good food, very good prices. Went and bought
silver necklaces for the kiddies. Then went back to the hotel for
some drinks. Went up to the room and packed for the trip home.
Early morning up at 7:30. We were at the airport by 8:30,
very thorough search they checked the bags, and we went to the gate.
Our flight was suppose to leave at 11…by was delayed for 1 hour.
It was an excellent flight home clear sky. Hell of a holding
pattern over Minneapolis! Finally made our decent in landing back
home. Over all, flight was good, but the plane had some issues!
Awesome trip cant wait until next year. Lodging
