Quickie Trip Report
Posted by Marshall on 09/12/02

Just came back from 5 days on the island. 9th trip in past 10 years.

Noticable chances
Cruise ship mall....There is now a cruise ship mall when Subway and Karen's use to be.  Everything a cruiser would want including a TGIF Friday's.

Prices
All of the food prices seem to have gone up in the last 2 years significantly.  There are more items on El Moro's menu over $12USD than I have ever seen.  Most lunches were around $15-20 with dinners at reasonable places (LaChoza, ElMoro and such) in the $30-40 range.  BTW KAREN'S WAFFEL HOUSE HAS MOVED JUST SOUTH OF BARACUDA,,VERY NICE LOCATION.

Hotels
Stayed again at PLG.  Very clean and recently painted and still cheap for a ****=$68 including tax through FunJet.  They are building a new 5 story condo on the North side of the hotel.  If you are staying there make sure you are in room numbers >28 or the noise will get to you.

Dives
Dove with Dive with Martin,....excellent service as this was the slow season there were only 5-6 divers on the boat.  David was DM, very young but very good.  Did most of the usual, current was good and had a great drift from San Francisco Reef to Palancar bricks.  Lots of good size turtles, grouper, schools of small baracuda.  Not too many green moray.

Airport.
Major redo on the airport, especially the departure side very nice.  They did hand check every bag going on.  Schuttle to PLG was $6/USD per person.

Taxis
Talk about adding a new taxi operator and elimanating 60 cabs.  No strike but talk of one.  Prices still the same.

We were disappointed on how the main drag has turned into nothing but cruise ship diamond stores and such, however the economy must be pretty good on the island, more US cars than ever and everyone seems to be riding a new scooter.

BTW THERE IS NOW A MICKEY D'S AND BURGER KING.

Thats all for now....
