Cozumel Trip Report Trip report form the heart..... Costa
Club Cozumel (Formerly Fiesta Inn) Day one of Dan and Mary Kay's anniversary adventure.... We arrived to cool weather that we never before experienced in Cozumel. We were mildly pleased and surprised at the improvements at the Cozumel airport. We sailed through check in and didn't have to wait long for our luggage. It used to be a small conveyour belt that was crammed in a corner and hard to get at. We got the green ( never had the red ) and off we went to our hotel the Costa Club. No problems checking in and through our things in the drawers. What do you expect from a binder chick! I thought that was pretty good considering I did use the drawers right away. I'd organize later. NOT! It was very windy and rough so we drank Dos Equiss. We were not happy with the changes at the hotel since it went to an optional All inclusive plan. They serve beer in plastic cups! Can you believe that? And no lime. Soooo we headed to town and first stop was Ernesto's. We had nachos and Dos XX and watched the people. We felt we were back where we belong. WOW Major changes by the pier downtown. A new tourist shopping mecca area we presumed. Same merchant hipe as we strolled around town but all you really have to do is smile and say " No Gacias" that's not that hard to do. They gotta make a living too! We ate dinner at a new restaurant in the far right corner of the plaza by the little fountain called Casa Blanca. The dinner was pretty good. Fajitas/enchalidasetc... and Strawberry Colada's. You will see a pattern throughout this report about the colada's. Disclaimer....I am not a lush! On our walk, blustery, back to the hotel we stopped at the Chedraui and bought our rolls for the morning. They added on because now the bakery is in the back. If you have never been there it is like shopping at the grocery store and Walmart in one stop. Bakery, tires, bras, all the essentials. Checked out ( don't forget to tip the little guys and gals who put your stuff in the bags ). The Costa Club is only a mile from downtown so we got back and sat out by the ocean for our first night smooch! Then slept like a baby anticipating the 10 days to follow. More later.... Trip report from the heart part 2... Our first full day and still rough on the main side of the island. Dan and I knew that if it was rough here the east side would be great! So we rented our jeep right at our hotel. They have an area ther you can rent mopeds, jeeps, trip adventures, etc... Same price as the last few years $66 US. We checked the jeep over with the guy and noticed that they now have new jeeps all over. Remember anyone the old VW's and jeeps that used to be for rent. Anyway, no problem..we charged to our card and took off for the east side. Not a soul around at 8 AM and we found our spot. We usually come in from the north road because we love to go throught the residential area in town and see the ocean from Mescalito's for the first view of the ocean. Alone on the beach for several hours. Dan played in the waves which were small and I soaked up the sun. He is in heaven when on this side. I will forever have this perfect picture of a totally happy man her in the waves. I like it when it is somewhat cloudy otherwise you get burned too fast. We drove to Mescalito's for a snack lunch and Dos XX's. I have to say I think their nachos are the best on the island. Around four we drove back to the hotel to clean up and find Dave (bun man),Cathy Domeier and kids at the Paradisus.Found their hotel and what a beautiful place it is! They had the loveliest room and the view was to die for! They are great fun and we made plans to meet another day for dinner. Oh yea...we interrupted their afternoon siesta!!! OWW LAA LAA !!! Well....after that we had dinner at the Lobster House. Great food and atmosphere. There are two Lobster name places on the island. I think the Lobster House on the north end is better than the Lobster Cove on the south end of town. We left the restaurant, took a drive and ended up at our hotel late in the evening. The hot tub was empty and we had our second good night smooch there. Little did we know it would be our last visit to the hot tub. Dan saw the next night someone relieving himself into the hot tub. So ended any more wistful thoughts of relaxing there! Still was a bit cool and had to wear our trip down sweatshirts but hey....still not like home. Rudy our concierge said it would only last another day! I tended to want to believe him. Rudy has been there as many years as we have been coming and he's a blast. In fact the people that are at the Costa Club were the same ones we've had before the change over from Fiesta Inn and they are all great. Just the place has changed. No more blender drinks and the food never was our favorite so we spent very little time there. Next trip we will take the plunge and find a little villa. You still can walk to the beach at these hotels and use them. That's OK because still more adventures and food to be explored. I really must do some work now....more later.last trip report form the heart..... I am sorry this is so late and please forgive me. I always enjoy the reports and here I am....late! The restaurants on our trip Jan.22 thru 31st. were so great. We ate at Guido's which was the best I have ever had. Garlic shrimp and pasta with the biggest garlic popover you ever saw. Romantic, peaceful, very Italian. Of course I have never been there so to me very Italian. The Rockin Java south of town was our favorite breakfast and lunch spot. Healthy homemade muffins warmed for you, $2.99 breakfast specials. Eggs, toast, american fries, juice. For lunch they have the best chef salads with hard boiled eggs etc....very good and yes you can eat the lettuce here! We start missing salads about midweek while in Cozumel so this is a treat. Sit in the back so you can watch the navy guys do their flag raising ceremony in the morning. The windows at Rockin Java look right into the backyard so to speak of the Navy barracks. Maybe I should run away to Coz. and join the Navy. At least I'd be near the ocean. Mescalito's on the east side has the best nachos on the island. Playa Sanfrancisco south of town excellent food and the waiters so nice. Strawberry coladas the best here! Lobster House North of town was very good. There is a Lobster Cove south of town, great scenery and good breakfast but not the best meal we had. We had wonderful food at La Mission ( I never saw a huge fish hanging in the doorway any time we were there) They make a dish of shrim cooked right at your table to die for. First they bring a delightful soup, then garlic bread, chips, guacamole, all with perfect timing. Then the entree. The service is exceptional. We ahve eaten at La Choza in the past and didn't like it. Tried to find Manati...hope you do! Supposed to be great. New place right back corner of Plaza called Casa Blanca. The little guy that runs it is a sweetheart and really trying to make it go. I hope he does. Pretty good Mexican Platter. Great strawberry coladas. Plaza Leza was pretty good. Not the best but good service and watching the people go by was fun. Great strawberry coladas. Seeing a pattern yet???? Ernestos on the main has the best Chimichangas! My husband loves their fijatas. Breakfasts are very good and cheap here too. The Dos Equiis on the island can't be beat either!!!! We found a liquor store here that sells it also and we get lime, but something is missing......could it be the ISLAND??? To sum it up we had good food and wonderful food. Never did we walk away thinking that was a bad meal. We didn't eat three meals a day so couldn't check them ALL out. Lots of days we hit the Chedraui and bought our bakery. Then off to the east side to eat by the waves and spend some time........ lots of smooooooching! After 25 years we are entitled. My advise.... as you stroll around town for the night just pop in to a restaurant and give it a try. Many great little places on back streets for sure!!! And no cruise crowds!!! Joes I forget which back street has a lovely garden area in back. In fact walk through some of the restaurants like Plaza Leza, Guidos, Joes......they have the most beautiful private garden areas that look out to the stars. Amazing! I know I missed some places but.....you tell us about them on you return..... Lodging Reviews
