 Cozumel Trip Report
Posted by Nancyjo on 02/24/02

Trip report 2/10 -- 2/17

We didn't have as good weather this year but rain and clouds on Coz is better than anything we get in Michigan in Feb. anytime! We booked through Apple Vacations and flew out of Chicago -- the airport stuff is the worst part of any trip..... nuff said.                                       WE arrived late around 10:00pm at the Allegro  -- no suburbans, brand new vans instead air conditioned too, check in was a breeze as was check out when we left. The grounds were beautiful even in the dark! Lots of nice lighting. Got an upstairs room -- smelled just like our roon at the Reef last year, a little musty, but I think this is not uncommon on Coz. Too late for food so we went to the bar for a drink and a nice stroll then hit it. MON 2/11: Started out the day at the buffet, the food was very good and a great variety. Next to our meeting with our Apple rep. which was very informative. Tried to reach Smart Car (we had a reservation) without much luck. When we did they said they would call us back when our car was ready, I don't think they wanted to come out to Allegro, oh well we got a chevy pop from Fiesta at the hotel for just as good a rate and more convinient. We spent most of the day on the beach (read 2 books this trip so I guess it was relaxing, Terri!) ate lunch at the snack bar and back to the bech. Got some pretty heavy "mist" so decided to head to the room. Watched a movie until dinner time at the buffet then headed into town to find the BBQ at HSM .......... never found the BBQ because I thought I knew where I was going and didn't bring any info from my binder with me into town. I was looking for the Hotel SanMiguel which I had seen last year right on the square. When I stepped in there to ask about the BBQ they looked at me like I was from outer space (no just spaced!) so we just wandered around town for an hour or so. When we got back I looked in the binder and found the name was Hacienda San Miguel. Oh well, I was VERY disapointed and sorry to have missed out on such a special occaision. TUES.2/12: WE did the beach and snorkeling thing today right at the resort, the snorkeling in front was pretty good, enough to keep us occupied for the morning anyway. Went to the buffet for lunch and decided to check out the hammock on our deck .... it was great! Showered and headed into town for the parade which we enjoyed very much. Sat in an area with mostly locals and did a lot gesturing and smiling LOL. Headed back to the resort and bed.    WED.2/13:  We went to Punta Sur today, took the shorter tour but would like to go bsck some day and do the all day tour to see the whole lagoon system. Climbed the lighthouse, what a beautiful view. We also got to see Poncho and Juanita -- crocs. Everything was so beautiful. By the time we got back to the Allegro we were dying of the heat, the car was about 200 degrees and didn't cool down much on the ride back! We already had our suits on so we headed right to the pool and got in --- ahhh ---- what a relief! Did the usual tv, dinner and nightly entertainment -- got rained on at the show and soaked by the time we made it to our room, dryed off and hit it.  THUR 2/14: Did the breakfast buffet before heading to Chankanaab. We were early enough to get our pick of the papapalas and loungers and rented a locker. The snorkeling was great, saw the big ole barracuda that hangs out there, Wow! After our fill of snorkeling we checked out the rest of the park and enjoyed it very much. A Mexican woman cooked us a tortilla with salsa over a fire, what a nice experience. Pretty much ate drank and rested the rest of the day at our resort.  FRI.2/15:  Going on a snorkeling trip to Columbia and Palancar Reefs today, made Columbia and had a great time, lots of fish but then the Mexican Gov't boarded our boat for a random inspection which took over an hour and they wouldn't let us go on to Palancar, so our tour went to Paradise Reef instead. This was a big disapointment but we did see an Eagle Ray at this area so that made up for a lot!!It was so beautiful to watch, we followed it for awhile and then reluctantly returned to the boat. Long day in the sun -- ate dinner, watched the show for awhile and bed.  SAT.2/16:  Today we just spent the whole day out and about on the beautiful island of Coz. East side, west side, north and south. This was one of my favorite days.Ate lunch at La Choza, very good but pricey. Dinner at the resort and packin' up for tomorrow. SUN.2/17:   We don't fly out until 9:00 pm so we juststayed around the resort taking pictures of the grounds and lolling on the loungers in the shade until time to head to the airport           We had a great trip, enjoyed every minute even in the rain. After all it is that moisture that helps make Cozumel so beautiful. Snow on the ground at home but always glad to get there!      Addios, Nancy
