Cozumel Trip Report
Posted by Richard on 09/19/01

Trip report 9/4 = 9/18

Things are changing on the island to say the least.
From the people we talked to these changes began long before last Tuesday.
Several Restaurants have closed many are for the present limiting the hours they are open.
VIVA Mexico closed one night around 8:00 PM
Several of the large and older restaurants are seriously for sale. I am not sure if I should say which ones they  are .
This "Slow Season" has been slower than normal at least according to restaurant staff and dive masters and Instructors that we know and talked with.
They all give the same reasons for the lack of customers.
All of the owners we talked with disclosed that the rent increases have or will put them out of business soon! There is no turning back what is done is done.
The cost of building and or buying a home has risen dramatically ! Store rents as stated are going through the roof especially if you are presently running what appears to be a profitable business. Some of the smaller hotels are in serious trouble too.
Enough doom and gloom thought some might be interested in what we saw and heard.
I arrived Tuesday the 4 th of Sept. It was hot and sunny and yes Jim did remember to pick me up at the airport. YES and there is now a hairdryer permanently installed in the house. I saw it and could not resist getting it for the house.tehehe :)
WE dove 2 / 2 tank dives in 14 days . Water was warm 84 +or-  vis. was 80+ feet
Current at times was exciting. VERY Few boats out the first week and fewer yet in the days that followed.
The cost of eating out continues to go up , just like it does here, 40 miles outside of Chicago. Most expensive meal and a fabulous meal it was , was the Veranda . Our cheapest , and yes there are cheaper ones to be had , was 2 hot dogs and a coke $2.60 on the Melgar and 2nd.
Dave and his band are still at the Cactus. Yes Joe's is gone forever! Jorge is now a DJ for weddings and birthdays. Seems he thought the river would never end its flow . IT DID !
There is a new club called the Shake it Up .
Its only open 3 nights a week and its 2nd and 3rd nights where not good .
Another Club to open soon, talked with the owner , should be open by Thanksgiving.
On the water front , a Jazz/Blues Bar
1 of the older smaller and nicest hotels which has FYI beautiful grounds and a refurbished pool is going Condo. Once again I am not sure this is for pubic knowledge as of yet, but this will be a GREAT buy when it happens . The papers have been in the works for 4 years. These people are VERY honest American owners who will maintain their home on the complex. Keep your eyes and ears open for this one.
You can still find a beer for about 65 cents with live music on the island , so some things never change , for now that is .

God Bless America
Its good to be HOME !
