Cozumel Trip Report

Coral
Princess

I went to Coz from July 20-26th and had a
magnificent time! I want to thank everyone on this discussion board for being so
helpful. My girlfriend and I stayed at the Corral Princess and found the
hotel to be nice and the snorkeling to be great. Also, my girlfriend had
never dove before and Luis, the Dive Master at Pepe's, was fantastic. He
was stern, but also extremely patient and understanding. My girlfriend felt very
comfortable with him and so did I. One warning though, is that the first resort
dive is really more to get you comfortable, there wasn't a whole lot that we
saw... a few eels and some interesting fish. Once you finish though, you
can pay and go on two reef dives that are magnificent. I say this only to
inform others, not at all meant as a complaint. But most importantly, my
girlfriend and I found many of the restaurants that the hotel was recommending
to be very touristy and only so so. We decided to travel inland in San
Miguel, and this was one of the best decisions we made. We found a
magnificent luncheria (Robertos) that didn't look like much, but they were by
far the best tacos I've ever had. These were not hardshell tacos, they
were made with handmade corn tortillas and they were filled with magnificent
pork, beef or chicken. I recommend the pork, it was excellent. My
girlfriend and I had three tacos each, and I must say, it was the best meal on
the islandand it was only 7 dollars (and no nobody got sick). We also went
to another local place called Via Mexico. This should not be confused with
the club viva Mexico which is on the main strip on the coast in San Miguel. This
place had the wonderfully sweet cinnamon flavored coffee that is found in many
parts of Mexico's mainland and their tacos were very good too. They also have
this great drink of beer and lime juice. Now these are served all over in
Mexico and are easy to make if you order it(I don't remember what they are
called), and very refreshing even if it sounds strange. Back to the tacos,
there are two ways to make the tacos... Carnitas are tacos that have just meat,
there is no marinated sauce or anything... Robertos has the marinated meats and
this was outstanding. One word of caution... both of these places are
unlikely to have people that speak all that much English. My girlfriend is
Bolivian so she did the ordering... I was the Gringo thart sat back and reaped
the benefits. Other fun things that we did was to rent a car and drive around
the island. Was extremely disappointed with Chaakanab... very amusement
park like (though we didn't dive there), enjoyed Marley's bar (hammocks are
great seating devices for a bar on the beach), and as you round your way back
towards San Miguel on the Drive around the coast there is a collection of a few
souvenir stands and a bar. This bar has magnificent nachos!!! I encourage
everyone to try them. I don't remeber the address for either of the
luncherias that I mentioned, but I will get them from my better half and post
them if anyone is interested. Thanks again for all of your help.
