Cozumel Trip Report Cozumel Vacation Fiesta
Americana Reef Resort We've just returned from Cozumel and I thought I'd pass along our observations and reactions to the places where we ate, the dive operator we used and where we stayed while on the island. We were in CZM from March 24
through March 31, 2001. It was our first time on the island and all I can say is
WOW! We planned it as a diving vacation with one in our party who couldn't dive.
We chose to stay at the Fiesta Americana Reef and I couldn't have been happier.
We had two rooms on the 6th floor, center of the building, looking over the
ocean and We ate in town every night. Our recommendations are as follows (voted by the 4 of us from best to least): Santiago's, Pancho's Back Yard, El Moro, Ernesto's Fajita Factory (downtown), Choza, and finally Guido's. We never experienced any health problems from eating downtown, or for that matter, anywhere on the island. We tried to drink only bottled water and had many Margaritas' and Pina Colada's to help the digestion. Every night we went over to Zermatt's (bakery) and loaded up with sweet rolls, muffins and bread for the morning's meal, eaten prior to diving. If Zermatts was closed, there is another bakery nearby that is closer to town that stays open later though not as good. There are several large markets that are useful for loading up on items like water, Tequila, sunscreen. American Express cards are useful in many places as well as Visa. We exchanged dollars into pesos but I really don't think it's necessary. You even have the choice of getting money from ATM's in either pesos or dollars. Internet coffee shops are everywhere. We never felt the least bit unsafe walking around the town in the evenings. We used Aldora Divers for 5 days
of diving. They use high pressure, 120 CF steel tanks which means you have to
have your normal yoke fittings changed over to DIN fittings. They have all the
necessary hardware to do the changeover for you. You simply bring all your
equipment to them the night before your dive and from then on, your equipment is
on the boat and ready to go each day when they pick you up at your pier. The
most divers on the boat at any time was 7. The boats had twin 150's to get us to
and from our dive sites with plenty of speed. We had three dive masters the time
we were there and can recommend most highly a man named Bill. He had a great
attitude, was very helpful to those of us who were new, and was all the time
pointing out things to see underwater complete with a readable slate. Now here's
the best part, our dives averaged nearly an hour underwater and low and behold
but we were cold at the end of that time! Never thought that would happen. The
water temp was 77 degrees and we were diving with 1/2-mil skins. Bring a shorty
if you have it. We had lunch at Playa del Sol everyday between dives. Food was
good and reasonable. We were very pleased We rented a car from ISIS Autos and Moto's on 5th Ave North. The car was a brand new hardtop VW (the bug type) and included all insurance's. The cost was 400 pesos for the day and he said he's go 350 peso's a day for a week's rental. We drove the whole island, which is worth the drive. I'd be glad to answer any
questions, as this is a great place to Lodging Reviews
