Well, we just got back from 8 wonderful days in Coz. We came home on
the 24th. Unfortunately, my ear problems prevented me from diving except
for one day. We went with Sand Dollar (the Paradisus dive operator) to
Santa Rosa Wall and Tormentos. It wasn't anything to write home about.
The water wasn't very clear because of recent storms and I was having
ear problems so I didn't enjoy it as much as I could. It had been
several years since my wife and I dove, so we paid for our own divemaster.
"Chuckie" did a great job for us, making sure I was OK and
showing us as much as he could find. It was well worth the extra $35.00.
Now, for the Paradisus. Yes, the water was murky. I believe it's
because there is so much seaweed growing just offshore. Also, there were
a couple of storms while we were there and they stirred up the sand on the
bottom. However, it was no big deal. Just down the beach is clear
water past the breakwater. We only saw one jellyfish while we were
there.
We found the Paradisus to be a very good all-inclusive. Our room was in
the three story building facing the beach and it was beautiful. It was
clean and everything worked, including the safe. It was also away from
the noisy pool bar. I do believe they don't have sufficient
dehumidifiers to dry out the room, though. Most of our stuff stayed damp
while we were there. Again, no big deal.
We did talk with some folks who were staying in one of the timeshare rooms in
the tower. They weren't pleased with their very small room. Also,
they couldn't eat or drink at the hotel without paying $65.00 per person per
day.
Our room was quite large so it wasn't a problem to us. Also, I have read
on the board that the timeshare people hassle you at the Paradisus. We
never saw one and none of the staff even mentioned timeshare.
The beach was great and long enough that my wife and I took several long
walks. After you leave the hotel property it gets pretty trashy, though.
It was still fun to have that much beach on this side of the island.
There was a lot of shade available and plenty of beach chairs.
The food was excellent and the staff was extremely polite and helpful. They
worked very hard to keep the place clean and neat. I particularly loved
the dessert table. Although we went into town several times, we ate all
but one meal at the hotel. We had to visit Costa Brava for lobster.
It has always been one of our favorites. We ate at the Cafe
Parisus (SP?) a couple of times. That is one of the reservations only
restaurants at the hotel. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was
very romantic (my wife particularly liked that.) Also, we had no problem
getting reservations when we wanted them. The snack bar made very good
hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, etc. The bars served name brand as
well as Mexican liquor and there was always a bar open somewhere on the
property. We certainly didn't suffer from hunger or thirst.
All in all, we would go back to the Paradisus. I believe we got a very
good deal for the amount we paid. Having to take a cab to the Reef Club
to dive was a little bit of a problem, but Sand Dollar paid the fare both
ways. Makes me wonder how they make any money since the diving was very
reasonable.
If any of you are headed for the Paradisus, I suggest you try to get one of
the beach side rooms and stay out of the tower. We were very happy,
except when we had to leave.
Hopefully we'll be able to go back in December. That's our current plan.
For those of you on your way there, I'm jealous.
