Cozumel Trip Report Trip Report-Playa Azul This was a too short heavenly 4 night trip. For some reason, we encountered more glitches along the way than on previous trips, but most turned out good in the end.Day 1 Feb. 19 My husband, Fred, our daughter, Terri, her husband, Bruce, and I went through checkin at DFW and flight to Cozumel pleasantly and in routine manner. Then the first glitch reared its ugly head. Terri's and Bruce's BIG bag didn't show up. The one with their masks, snorkels, swim suits, etc. We waited until all baggage was claimed except one orphan BIG bag similar to theirs. Found the tour representative who consulted his list only to find that the name of orphaned bag's owner wasn't on his list. Got in vans and headed for Playa Azul. Charming, small, pleasant hotel. Showed to our room. Great location. First floor patio opening directly on to the beach. Just steps from the lobby and restaurant. Glitch #2. I am what one might call "mobility impaired" thanks to a wreck of major proportions. We had reserved a suite with easy accessibility. Location was great. Not a suite. Small room. Talked to the very nice manager. Trouble is the new building has an elevator but no suites. Was also full. Old building has no elevator and no suites on the first floor. Remembered the old real estate adage, LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION. We settle in, loan Bruce a swim suit and T shirt. Terri wouldn't be caught dead in one of my suits so they headed for town to buy one. Cocktail time on our wonderful patio. Tour representative shows up with BIG bag. All's right with the world. Have a nice dinner in hotel restaurant, and then glitch#3. I can't really claim to be a binder chick but am something of a binder broad. One of those ugly brown folders stuffed with print outs from the board, the famous map, etc. Terri and Bruce want to set up a trip on the Arrecifes. No printout, no phone number. Nada. Desk clerk had never heard of it. Was in neither th white or yellow pages of phone book. Binder broad falls flat. Day 2 Tues. Feb. 20 Breakfast at delightful beach front restaurant five steps from our patio. Encamp under a palapa close to pier and dive shop. Guy at dive shop asks if we're intersted in a glass bottom boat. No thanks. Check out pier for snorkel possibility. Water absolutely teeming with jelly fish! Sign up for glass bottom boat trip. Terri and Bruce show up. They have signed up for a snorkel trip which turns out to be the same boat. We pick up one other snorkeler and an older British couple on the way to the reefs. I can't snorkel from a boat because I can't negotiate the ladder. The captain was great at positioning the boat so that we could see stuff through the glass. Starfish, a moray eel. and a stingray come to mind. Fred and I thoroughly enjoyed the cruise ship couple. We got to be the experts. When we got back to Playa Azul, there were absolutely no jelly fish. Grabbed nachos at the beach club. Snorkeled around the pier.Checked out the area. Gathered on patio for liquid libations. Consulted brown folder. Decided on the Lobster House. Good choice. Directly across street, nice atmosphere, and good food. Line up taxi for the next day for a little tooling around on otro lado. Day 3 Wed. Feb. 21 Great breakfast. Go to lobby to meet taxi driver. Glitch#??? Taxi driver reneges on price. Big time. Could it be because of the many huge cruise ships in town today? Decide to rent a jeep. Fred volunteers to drive. Bless him. First stop Chedraui for beer, diet Coke, and pan dulce. Next stop marina. GLITCH! Jeep has been huffing and puffing and decides to die. No more vaminos. Call jeep people. Very nice folks. Bring us another jeep. Make it all the way to Francesco Beach Club before we can't ignore the call for cold cerveza one more minute. Finally make it to other side. Beautiful day. Blue ocean. God's glory. Words fail. Periodic stops for photo ops. Lunch at Coconuts. Binder broad scores again. Shrimp fajitas in paradise. And even iced tea. What more could a Texan ask for? Tired that night. Planned to go to the seafood place next to the Lobster House, but hotel restaurant won. Day 4 Thurs. Feb. 23 Step over for breafast. Still have the jeep. So Fred and I decide to drive over to check out Caribe. The security guard and the guy at the front desk were friendly and helpful. The outside of the tower looks like it needs sand blasting or something. However, the inside lobby, hallways, and room were in very good shape. Still have absolutely enormous rooms and spectacular views. Later talked to a coule at the airport who had been there, and they were very pleased. Back to Playa Azul. A little snorkeling, a lot of beach bumming, lunch at the beach club. Ugly brown folder consultation resulted in dinner at Pancho's Back Yard. Good choice. Terris Kebob thingy came on a contraption with embers to keep the meat hot. Very impressive. Split up. Fred and I grabbed a cab for the golfito. By this time it was eight or so. Met Debbie and Tut from the board. Also Scott and Sally, who are as nice as everyone says they are, and most importantly - Sunshine. A little sangria. Call it a day. Day 5 Fri. Feb. 24 Pack. Fly home. Get to see our dog. Planning next trip. Lodging Reviews
