El Presidente: Top Rated Hotel in Cozumel

Just returned from a lovely week in Cozumel at the El Presidente. Our first trip there and it was all we had hoped, and more. The people there are so friendly and attentive, and the climate this time of year is fabulous. Rather than go through a blow by blow of our week, I thought I'd just do a list of do's and don'ts.....So here goes..............

The Do's
1. Snorkel/Lunch at Dzul Ha's.  As good snorkeling as Cayman (except maybe a Devils Grotto).  Wonderful food. Cold Beer. No cruisers.
2. Dinner at El Capi Navagante.  Great food and atmosphere with tableside flambes,Caesars and guitarists. Very festive.
3. Any meal at Panchos Backyard. Browse through Cinco Sol before or after. Sample free tequila. Best prices on pure vanilla extract.
4. Tour east coast. Beers and cheeseburgers at Mecalitos. Have your photo made with Elvis and elvis's brother. (Igaunas) Very cold beer. Jimmy Buffet music. Saw a couple happy ladies have the photo made sans tops!!!!
5. Eat at El Moro. Half the fun is finding it!!  Seriously, food is great.  Very reasonable. They sell those neat wooden bowls that the salsa is served in. A good souvenier.
6. Happy hour at the El Presidente oceanside bar. Two for one with free snacks from five to seven every night. Beautiful place to watch the sunset. We did this every day.
7. Mini golf downdown. Very envious of the hosts. They live in a neat "treehouse" on the premises. Very beautiful setting. Walkie talkies are a nice touch.
8. Relax. Relax. Relax.
9. For a nice steak, Pepes or the inside restaurant at El Presidente. Both excellent, I would compare quality to a Ruth Chris. Both do tableside Caesar salad from scratch.
10. Eat at Guidos. Forget Prima. Guidos is great. For pizza or pasta or fish for that matter. I had Wahoo and a spinach salad to die for. Topped with blackened shrimp and mango dressing with slices of mango. Hmm.
11. Eat the fresh fish and shrimp. Best shrimp down there ever. So fresh and tasty. Like lobster.
12. Experience Carlos and Charlies just once....
13. Eat breakfast at both the Museum and Rock and Java. Both very good food and reasonable.
NOW, the Don'ts.....

1. Avoid downtown on Tuesday and Wednesday when there will be 4-5 ships in town. The merchants attack you with their pleas to come in and check them out. Better to go late in evening on those days. Shops stay open late anyway.
2. Avoid Chankanaub. Period. We made the mistake of going on Tuesday and the place was mobbed with cruisers.  Really the gardens are nice, but if you are staying in a place on the ocean, dont bother going here. The snorkeling is not as good as Dzul Ha and it is too damned commercialized. We only staying about two hours.  Avoid this tourist-trap in my opinion.
3. Don't be afraid to bargain with any merchants. We got good discounts at the Museum shop, which is government owed.  The only place that wouldnt dicker was Cinco Sol. And of course the cab drivers who must have been schooled in NYC.  Man they drive like their butt is on fire!!!

Enjoy Amigos.  I will be coming back.  And the El Presidente was a great place to stay. The facilities are wonderfully laid out and maintained. Salute..........
