Ok. It's been almost 3 weeks since we got back to reality. I
haven't visited this board once since returning because I'm having a severe
case of PCS - Post Cozumel Syndrome. It's technically classified as a
Major Depressive Disorder, characterized by severe mood swings and jealousy
when discovering some other lucky soul will soon be visiting Cozumel, and NOT
me!
We visited that land of diabetes and hyperlipidemia from 7/2 to 7/9 and stayed
at PLG (are there any thin cozumelanians?). My wife, whom I
affectionately call the "Princess", approved of our hotel - brownie
points for me. We enjoyed pool time there, and their awesome 2-for-1
happy hour at 4pm every single day.
Main activities:
-3 dives our first day with Sea Urchin Scuba, one being a nite dive. All
good dives and excellant service.
-2 dives our 2nd day with Aldora. Good stuff as always. Even an
air hog can stay under an hour with their steel tanks.
-4 rounds of golf in 2 days at the Cozumel Country Club. Wow! It
was in awesome shape, one of the nicest courses I've ever played on. Super
plush fairways (they looked plush from the rough/hazard areas) with carpet
greens. My first hole there I birdied (that was the only one too...) -
what a start! We saw only 4 golfers TOTAL in all 4 rounds- no one else
was playing. We booked a room at Playa Azul for 1 nite ($160) to get the
golf free, and only paid $20/round cart fee. Total costs for 4 rounds
was $160! I can't do that here at my crummy muni course.
Pool and recovery time the last 3 days with a trip around the island in a
jeep, with the mandatory pitstops (and power naps) at Paradise Cafe and
Cocunuts. We also took the ferry over to Playa Del Carmen and all
thought it was way overrated and a waste of pool time.
As far as eating goes, our most frequently visited establishment was the ice
cream shop 2-3 blocks east of town near the gym. We must have eaten 2000
calories in ice cream everyday (chocolate chip was the best...).
El Capi Navigante was overrated and overpriced, but at least was air
conditioned.
La Mission in downtown was good, as was La Choya (sp??). We left the
bigger "La Mission" (the one with tigers) when we saw the menu was
identical to the one off the square but 50% higher.
Our favorite locals restaurant was another "La Mission" located off
of Ave #30. Awesome, cheap food and steaks. We saw only locals
there, so we knew it would be good.
Prima kicked butt as always, the Lobster in red sauce with linguini rocked!
We ate there twice.
We had to try the French Quarter one nite when we were getting desperate for
American food and were all very pleased with the food (ribs, chicken fried
steak, and fish). The owners are very personable and likeable.
Now it's back to doing the countdown to next year's trip. Hopefully we
can get a last minute deal over Thanksgiving and return to "Mecca" a
little sooner...
