The Paradisus Resort

We just came back from the Paradisus, and it was GREAT!  The personnel and staff were friendly, we were unable to find anyone grumpy there, bartender or otherwise.  We stayed in the tower on the 11th floor, almost able to reach out and touch the sky!  The room was nice, the view was spectacular..we looked out over the swim up bar pool, directly to the ocean.  The water was rough the first two days we were there, but anyone who has ever lived near a large body of water knows that when there are storms over it, debris and jellyfish will be pushed into shore.  The beach was clean, and we could actually see fish from our terrace!  They were still working on some of the rooms in the Tower, and in the other two areas, but it's during the day, they quit for siesta, which is a WONDERFUL thing, and they were gone by about 5PM. The only thing wrong with our room was the motion sensor on the door and in the room...they didn't work, so the AC never shut off...BRRRRR!  But since we were'nt in it alot, we just shut it off occasionally. We did have a problem getting water, we called 3 times in one day, and got it the next when we called again!  And for those of you who burn easily...they DO NOT use fabric softener there, so the towels are rough..you might want to bring one or two.

As for things to do...we didn't have enough time for it all, and we were there 6 days.  We'd recommend renting a car and going around on the island road.  One word of warning, if you decide to do it at night, be prepared to meet some of the Mexican Army....they are on the corner where Mescalito's is with a fire lit...looks like someone built a bonfire..they flashed their lights at us, and we just waved and kept moving....when we did stop, they came up to the car armed with what looked like AK-47's.  They just looked around the car and waved us on.  But it is totally dark on that side of the island, great for stargazing...we saw some tarantulas, one really BIG crab, and a HUGE snake...none of which he'd let me go see...party pooper!  The ruins are kind of neat...we did see two iguanas there. We went to San Gervasio, there are more.  We also would definitely recommend the snorkling...it's a whole different world underwater...we saw barracudas, eels, countless number of parrotfish and all sorts of other fish.  I've never seen so many beautiful colors...just look around for a good tour.  The second day we went out with an outfit called Equalizers...don't waste the money.  The guides could speak no english, the three hour trip was supposed to include lunch, we never got it, and we spent an hour each way just getting there.  The only good thing was they didn't rush us out of the water.

San Miguel itself is neat....stay away from the stores on the main street tho...they cater to the cruise ships and the prices reflect it! Go to the interior of the plaza.  Every Sunday they have a festival in the square...the night we were there, they were crowning the Queen for an upcoming festival. The dresses were pretty, the embroidery on them was fantastic.  If you visit the square, you have to visit the small coffee shop on the corner.  It is on the side with the clock tower, and if you are facing the stores, it's on the rght side, last store. Go in and tell the proprietor that Jerry Garcia lives!  The other coffee shop is the Coffee Bean, it's down the street from the Viva Mexico store, the cabbies all know where it is.  Terry said it is the best place in town for a great latte!  The soda tastes differently there, and it's a caffeine lover's dream!  Diet Pepsi is the old Pepsi Light formula with the lemon, but they have all the major brands there.  We didn't eat off the resort, but there are alot of great places to get just about anything.

We're going back for sure...we had to come back to work to get money to go back...funny how things work that way.  The paradisus resort as a whole was a very satisfactory experience.
