Cozumel Trip Report

Six of us took a vacation to Cozumel on 2/12/01-2/19/01.  We stayed at the Iberostar and were very impressed with the accommodations and the staff.  We took a UPS Charter flight with Apple Vacations.  We landed in Cancun and then took the flight to Cozumel. The UPS flight was on time, and we had a great time with the crew.  This was the best time we had on an airplane.  I would recommend it very highly.

The first day, we just lounged around the hotel and enjoyed the great weather.   We had the buffet dinner and went to the show that evening.   The dinner was excellent and so was the show.

The next day, we took a walk on the beach to the Allegro.  It was very challanging.  If you go, it is best to wear some beach shoes as the beach is very rough on the feet.  We had made reservations earlier to go to one of their specialty restaurants, El Serape.  We found the food to be just so-so; not as good as the buffet.

We went to the nightly show and joined in the dance at the end of the show.   After each show, they do a Mexican line dance and try to get everyone up on the stage to participate.

On Valentine's day, we went on a bike trip to El Cedral, and then took the ferry to Playa Del Carmen.  We visited the Iberostar there and stayed the rest of the day.  It is a beautiful hotel, with a jungle motif.  We had lunch there and also swam in the pool.

The next day we went on an Island Tour.  Our guide, Velio, was very informative, and took us all around the island, giving us an education in the Mayan culture.  We went to the East side of the Island and took some pictures of the wild surf.  We also stopped at one of the local bars  (I think it was Mezcalito's), and had a Margarita.  Then he took us to the Mayan ruins at San
Gervasio.  After that, we opted to go to Chankanaab for snorkeling.  We toured the botanical and archeological gardens there.   It was a full day and we all enjoyed it.

On Friday,  we went on a four hour fishing trip.  We caught two large Mahi-Mahi's.  One must have been at least 25 pounds.  We could have had them mounted, but instead we donated them to our crew on the boat.  The sea was pretty rough that day, and we were hitting some very large waves.  We decided to fish in quieter waters, however, we did not catch anything after that.    We went back to the hotel and two people in our group took some Scuba lessons
in the pool, which is part of the all-inclusive package.

On Saturday, we went on a Glass Bottom Boat trip, which takes you to two reefs to snorkel.  It was a very nice trip, and the ocean was very calm.  A couple in our group went snorkling; the rest of us just enjoyed seeing the reefs from the boat.  That evening we had dinner at the other Specialty Restuarant, the Steak place.  Again, the service was great, but the food was
not as good as the buffet.  This was the day that the Iberostar had a Mexican Festival.  In the evening, there is a Mariachi band, and the show features various Mexican folk dances, which is well worth seeing.

On Sunday, we split up.  Three of us went to San Miguel to shop, and three decided on snorkeling at Corona beach. We met afterward to have dinner at the Lobster House in the Northern part of the Island.   The food was delicious, however, they do not take credit cards, so if you go there, you'll need cash.   The place is a bit pricey but well worth the trip.

On Monday, it was time to leave.  The UPS flight home actually left a little earlier than scheduled.  Again, it was a very smooth ride and a fun flight.    We were already talking about our next trip when we arrived in Philly.

To sum up, the Iberostar is an excellent hotel, and we recommend it very highly.  I didn't mention the great lunches that we had there.  The variety was incredible, from Pizza to Fish, Sandwiches, Hot Dogs, Salads, Hamburgers, you name it, it was there.
