Cozumel Trip Report 6/1 By the light of day, the Paradisus looked great. I hadn't been in 2 years and lots of things looked new and improved. We went down for breakfast and were greeted by Ignacio and the same waiter we had on our previous trips. Breakfast is out of this world there. I'm talking fresh squeezed every type of juice (I like the tangerine), omelets made to order, fruit and other regular breakfast items. After breakfast, we headed up to the room, the kids changed and took off for the pool. I unpacked my backpack and guess what? I LEFT THE MAP AT HOME. Thankfully I knew where I wanted to go anyhow. We hung out at the pool, beach, played pool basketbal, beach volleyball and had lunc from the snack bar. The kids had hot dogs, I had a burger with a big slice of onion, covered in guacamole and salsa. Yum. That afternoon we headed into town and picked up our topless VW from SMart. No problems there. I popped into one of the dive shops downtown and asked if they knew how I could make a reservation on the Arricefes. No problem. They put me in touch with someone named Lisa and we got set up for the next day. After a little cruisng downtown, we headed back to the Paradisus for dinner and the show. Dinner was good. We ate from the buffet and I had roast pork in orange sauce, pasta alfredo and fresh key lime pie for desert. The show was "LAs Vegas" and we enjoyed it. Before the show they did some kids games which are really fun. They usually do the same for adults after the show and give away bottles of tequila etc. All in all a great first day back in Cozumel. Next, the Arricefes trip, the good, the bad and the thong. Paradisus trip report 6/2 Woke up pretty early and jad another wonderful breakfast at the Paradisus. The children distributed the gifts we had brought to the hotel staff which were much appreciated. We always bring some smelly stuff for the maid and that along with a ouple of bucks here and ther assures fresh fruit and extra water in the room.We were down at the ferry pier by 9 to catch the Arricefes. We met cathy and Missy from Texas with Cathy's two boys who were also on the trip. About 9:30 we pulled out. The boat was fine, not as fast as I'd hoped but ok. Within minutes, my son was up on the fly bridge and at the invitation of the crew was driving the boat. He spent most of the day up there. We made 2 stops at other hotels and picked up some other folks. At the last stop, we picked up an interesting couple: a tall large red haired man and a 20 something woman with several tatoos, extremely well proportioned wearing a skimpy top and a pair of jean shorts. They were drinking beer and continued so on the boat. It soon became obvious that they were there to party hard. OK, no problem. We were under way for 15 minutes or so during which time one or both of my kids had come back to where I was sitting on the stern. The woman leans over and announces to me, "Look, I didn't know there would be kids on this boat. All I have on under these shorts is a thong. I don't care about the adults but I don't want to offend the kids". My kids have grown up at the beach and have seen it all so I told her to have at it. As she parted ways with the shorts, the guy next to me told me that if I had objected, he was going to push me overboard. Aside from the tatoos, it was a relatively nice view. We headed to Columbia and Palancar which got us into early afternoon. We then stopped at Nachi Com beach club for lunch and a dip in the pool. It was nice. Next to Dzul Ha. Immediately after getting in we saw a huge moray eel. The snorkeling there was great, the best I've seen in Coz. The ride in was very cool. By that time everyone had a few beers and were having fun. Tatoo/thong girl and her companion had been drinking nonstop all day. As the day wore on, their behavior and language got on the rough side. Thankfully, it was contained to the stern area of the boat. At one point thong girl bent over and touched her toes so her friend could take an up close picture. At that point I got up and moved to the front of the boat. My kids were not going to witness any of that behavior and I was ready to step in. Thankfully they stayed on the rear of the boat. Thong girl and her buddy were dropped off soon after and hopefully found what they were looking for. Great way to spend the day. We went back to the Paradisus to a nice dinner, the Broadway show and bed. Good day. Next: the wind, the hair and the shopping. Paradisus Trip report 6/3 Awoke this am to the sound of thunder, a light rain around 7, after that
overcast and windy. After another wonderful breakfast at the buffet, we
jumped in the topless VW and took off across island. Children wanted to
get in the surf but it looked awful rough at Mescalitos so we headed south.
We enjoyed watching a group of surfers on the breaks. We headed
further south to Coconuts where the water was not quite so strong. The
kids befriended a frisky dog who liked to fetch. We stayed a good while in
the surf and all not worrying about the less than perfect weather. Paradisus trip report 6/4-5 Woke up to a very windy and overcast day. So what, No problem, its vacation. We planned a trip across the ditch to Playa/Xcaret. I could have done a tour, but silly me, I thought i would do it on my own and save $. A little wrong but I figure it cost me an extra 20.The ferry ride was fun. My daughter slept in the a/c and my son and I hung out on the upstairs open air back deck. The ride was about 30 minutes. We hit the ground, hailed a taxi and headed south for Xcaret. We either were the last ride for the driver who was waiting on a hot date or he has been watching NASCAR. WOW, what a ride. We were at Xcaret in no time. If you guys have not done Xcaret it is worth the trip. It is an arch/eco/zoo/acqua park. You walk in and are greeted by beautiful birds, flamingos and monkeys. We first did the underground river float. It takes about 45 minutes and is a sight to see. I would not rent the snorkel gear-you don't need it-and then you have to carry it around for the rest of the day. Just bring a pair of swim goggles. There are so many things to see: butterfly sanctuary(all natural), bird sanctuary, 2 beach areas where you can snorkel or just stand there and let the fish swim around you, restaurants and mariachi bands everwhere, a marine turtle farm...so much. Plan to spend the whole day and into the night. In the afternoon evening there are Mayan shows, demonstrations. My children were fascinated with the flamingos and monkeys. This is worth a day trip. we stayed there all day and did not see it all. After Xcaret we headed back across, got back in time for a late dinner and show at the theatre. (I admit I like the shows too). 6/5 "The perfect Day" No rain this am and partly cloudy. I knew it was going to be a good day when our waiter at breakfast took my kids over to the grill and they both came back with a special order of french toast with all the trimmings. i on the other hand opted for an omelet, mexican potatos, etc. I had been using the fresh salsa but had been wishing for something mo' hot. I'm from South Louisiana and grew up with Tabasco. Well I found the GREEN STUFF. It must have been pure habanero on steroids. Talk about light up your taste buds. After breakfast we returned the car to Smart-no problems there and did our last shopping tour. I got a good deal on a rasta man hat that is now my most prized possession. Back to the Paradisus by 10:30. The gods of the sky had removed the veil of clouds and we were looking at mostly blue. We grabbed our gear which we had brought with us and headed down to El Coz for some snorkeling. I was impressed. While my daughter and I stayed in the water my son played volleyball. After an hour or so we walked back to the Paradisus. My daughter spent a good part of the afternoon painting a vase with the expert help of some nice ladies. The boys, on the other hand played 3 games of water polo. Much fun. we stayed out around the pool and beach until 7. That night in the buffet the grill chef was cutting fresh fillets off of a whole amberjack that must have been 50 lbs. The show that night was Sol Tropical and a few scantily clad ladies were enjoyed by all. (I think). What a day, what a trip. We flew out around noon arriving NO by 5, home by 6:30. Thanks to all you on this board, once again a memorable trip. Lodging Reviews
